Feminine Gospels | Carol Ann Duffy
7 posts | 11 read | 5 to read
In Feminine Gospels, Carol Ann Duffy draws on the historical, the archetypal, the biblical and the fantastical to create various visions and revisions of female identity. Simultaneously stripping women bare and revealing them in all their guises and disguises, these poems tell tall stories as though they were true confessions, and spin modern myths from real women seen in every aspect as bodies and corpses, writers and workers, shoppers and slimmers, fairytale royals or girls-next-door. Part of Duffys talent besides her ear for ordinary eloquence, her gorgeous, powerful, throwaway lines, her subtlety is her ventriloquism . . . From verbal nuances to mind-expanding imaginative leaps, her words seem freshly plucked from the minds of non-poets that is, she makes it look easy Charlotte Mendelson, Observer Nobody is ever going to need to be told how to enjoy a Carol Ann Duffy poem . . . She is an inspired reinterpreter of myth and a fertile creator of fables of her own Evening Standard Carol Ann Duffy is arguably the nations favourite living poet Jeanette Winterson

Mehso-so

I mean it was alright. Nothing in there was overly lad, but none of the poems particularly struck me or had any impact either, and I think a poem collection leaving you feeling neutral is probably the worst thing it can do to you

The food table had already been plundered when I thought to take a photo last night. The occasion was a monthly literary salon that we take turns hosting with a group of friends. Our theme this time was “Levity, Lifting, Lightness” and I read ‘The Diet‘ from the tagged poetry collection. (No hope of dieting today with a fridge full of tasty leftovers.)

DivineDiana I love that you have a theme! And your table looks so inviting! 6y
Lindy @DivineDiana We don‘t have to stick to the theme, but it actually helps to narrow down choices. Also, two poets were reduced to tears by the rawness of their own work last night, so it was a good thing that other folks had brought lighter-themed pieces to offset the grief. We ended by watching a video of Maya Angelou performing Still I Rise. 6y
DivineDiana @Lindy Does everyone bring a poem to read? I just bought the Maya Angelou book of poetry for that poem. 6y

Lindy @DivineDiana It‘s a mighty poem. I hadn‘t heard that particular performance before; she has a mischievous giggle partway through. At the salon, we can each read up to 5 minutes, and it can be poetry, prose, manifesto—whatever by whoever. 6y
DivineDiana Thank you! Sounds marvelous! Still aspiring to host a salon! ❤️ 6y
Lindy @DivineDiana My sweetie and some of our friends have organized various open mike events and series in the past. A year ago, they got together and said what if we do something more private, in our homes? It‘s like a book club, a closed group (except we all read different things). 6y

Pickpick

Poems about women - from Marilyn Monroe and Princess Di to the students and teachers at a secondary school - that are beautiful ("yards and yards of black silk night"), queer and sometimes absurd. Map-Woman, The Diet and The Laughter of Stafford Girls' High were my favourite poems in the collection.

"She got lost in arcades, in streets with new names, in precincts and walkways, and found that what was familiar was only facade."

Lindy So happy to see a Carol Ann Duffy quote! 💜💜💜 8y
Lauracastle @Lindy I have not read much poetry, but so far I am really enjoying Feminine Gospels! I also ordered Settler Education based on your Litsy feed! 8y
