I mean it was alright. Nothing in there was overly lad, but none of the poems particularly struck me or had any impact either, and I think a poem collection leaving you feeling neutral is probably the worst thing it can do to you
The food table had already been plundered when I thought to take a photo last night. The occasion was a monthly literary salon that we take turns hosting with a group of friends. Our theme this time was “Levity, Lifting, Lightness” and I read ‘The Diet‘ from the tagged poetry collection. (No hope of dieting today with a fridge full of tasty leftovers.)
Poems about women - from Marilyn Monroe and Princess Di to the students and teachers at a secondary school - that are beautiful ("yards and yards of black silk night"), queer and sometimes absurd. Map-Woman, The Diet and The Laughter of Stafford Girls' High were my favourite poems in the collection.
"She got lost in arcades, in streets with new names, in precincts and walkways, and found that what was familiar was only facade."
Started this today. Carol Ann Duffy is brilliant. And that cover. 😍😍
