When Michael Met Mina
When Michael Met Mina | Randa Abdel-Fattah
10 posts | 15 read | 31 to read
From the bestselling author of Does My Head Look Big In This? A boy. A girl. Two families. One great divide. When Michael meets Mina, they are at a rally for refugees - standing on opposite sides. Mina fled Afghanistan with her mother via a refugee camp, a leaky boat and a detention centre. Michael's parents have founded a new political party called Aussie Values. They want to stop the boats. Mina wants to stop the hate. When Mina wins a scholarship to Michael's private school, their lives crash together blindingly. A novel for anyone who wants to fight for love, and against injustice.

I've read very few contemporary YA books with an unflinching depiction of refugee situations, but #WhenMichaelMetMina was absolutely spectacular.

This is a book anyone can read, and it‘s a book that I feel all Australians SHOULD read. I would very much like to see this book become part of the high school curriculum one day.

All of these sound really interesting! I've added them to my #TBR list except Ms. Marvel, which I'm likely reading later today.

I sped through last night and this morning on the commute - this was an incredible read that covers headline grabbing issue in an open and accessible way. In Australia there is a cohort that wants to stop "the boats" in Europe it is a similar thing, in the US your president elect wants to build a wall. This books looks at the humanity behind these headlines it looks at one girl and her family. It wasn't preachy it was simple and clear #litsyatoz

Sue This looks great! How did I miss it being released?? 8y
Michelle_mck @Sue I missed it too Sue, I didn't see much about it and then saw it on someone's goodreads and got it from the Library - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did 8y

Loving this so far. The characters are fleshed out and realistic and it seems a fair portrayal of very different people.

This book is so relevant to today's society. The issues of immigration and asylum seekers are regularly in our news. This book made me think and question myself and my beliefs. Thought provoking and wonderfully written! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mina came to Australia ten years ago from Afghanistan as a refugee, Michael's parents are the grassroots organisers of a racist 'Aussie Values' group. Super relevant and deals with the impact of racism (both overt forms & microaggressions) in a thoughtful and absorbing teen romance.
