The Julian Chapter: A Wonder Story | R. J. Palacio
15 posts | 37 read | 19 to read
A New York Times bestseller A brand new, exclusive chapter from the bestselling, award-winning, and critically acclaimed novel Wonder. Over 1 million people have read Wonder and have fallen in love with Auggie Pullman, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face. Now readers will have a chance to hear from the book's most controversial characterJulian. From the very first day Auggie and Julian met in the pages of the #1 New York Times bestseller Wonder, it was clear they were never going to be friends, with Julian treating Auggie like he had the plague. And while Wonder told Auggie's story through six different viewpoints, Julian's perspective was never shared. Readers could only guess what he was thinking. Until now. The Julian Chapter will finally reveal the bully's side of the story. Why is Julian so unkind to Auggie? And does he have a chance for redemption?

I liked this. Seeing part of Julian‘s home life included a visit to his grandmother in Paris, and I loved her story.

Students listen to Julian Chapter's audiobook as they work on their Wonder project. #TeachersOfLitsy

ErikasMindfulShelf What grade? I'm teaching 3rd grade this year. Would Wonder be appropriate? 7y
hufflepuff_librarian @irre Wonder is one of those books that is appropriate for everyone! My third grade teachers teach it and the kids LOVE it!! 7y
ErikasMindfulShelf Thanks @hufflepuff_librarian I'll definitely read it before school starts so I can use it this school year! 7y

I read Wonder a few years ago and loved it and it's message. Reading the ignorance of Julian's parents in the first half of Julian's chapter was difficult, but I loved Grandmere's story and how it changed the views of the entire family. #choosekind

asiriusreader Love Wonder so much--it is such a joy to share it with students as well. I'll definitely have to read this one finally--been on my TBR for ages! 7y
Kaylamburson I'm so glad you have students to share Wonder with, @asiriusreader! I remember after I finished reading it, I was desperately trying to find young minds to convince they should read it, however, being the youngest of the family, I didn't know any! (Or they are too young still). But yes, I enjoyed this one! It helped remind me about details in Wonder that I had forgotten. 7y

I almost gave up halfway through because I couldn't tolerate Julian's attitude or his parents, but glad I stuck with it. Definitely worth reading after Wonder.

So after reading Wonder I'd made my mind up that Julian was just a little turd. The first half of this book reinforced my belief... and then everything I thought I knew began to unravel. As a black and white sort of guy, this brilliant account of Julian taught me that things are many shades of grey. If you have kids read this empathy building series with them. If you don't, read it yourself. Like me you might just learn something.

tpixie Thanks!! That how I felt about (adult book, not YA) Britt- Marie. There's always s back story we need to remember. 8y
mom2bugnbee I LOVED Julian's story. I'm so glad that different POV's were written. 8y

This short story puts an interesting light on the thoughts of a perceived bully. When read after Wonder, this is a great way to showcase empathy.

"highly recommend this little extra chapter, after you‘ve read Wonder. If you are dealing with bullying, this may give you a bit of insight as to why kids do the things they do. We may not agree with them, but we will have a better understanding of them." Reviewed by Melpomene http://bit.ly/2bYRks9

lynneamch Absolutely agree! I wondered how the author could ever manage to make Julian a sympathetic character, but she does. Hopefully, we learn something about preventing bullying, when we better understand the bully. 8y
