A Madness of Angels
A Madness of Angels: Or The Resurrection of Matthew Swift | Kate Griffin
8 posts | 19 read | 14 to read
Two years after his untimely death, Matthew Swift finds himself breathing once again, lying in bed in his London home.Except that it's no longer his bed, or his home. And the last time this sorcerer was seen alive, an unknown assailant had gouged a hole so deep in his chest that his death was irrefutable...despite his body never being found. He doesn't have long to mull over his resurrection, though, or the changes that have been wrought upon him. His only concern now is vengeance. Vengeance upon his monstrous killer and vengeance upon the one who brought him back.

Pickpick

Herein ends the first of the #2019readingchallenge “a book published in 2009”
So, do you like not knowing what‘s going on in your book or having distinct chapters? This has those things going on for it. Honestly, that‘s really my only criticism. A Madness of Angels is really a love letter to the gunky side of London.

I love this book and have read it twice now, but. It isn't easy to get into, it has a confusing first half and there's a very good reason for that. Stick with it and you shall be rewarded.

This is the first book I consciously categorized as #urbanfantasy, though I'm sure there were others in the genre that I'd read before it! I loved this, though I still need to finish the series. It's set in a fascinating alternate/fantasy London, with some wonderful world-building and a super-creepy villain. And isn't it a gorgeous cover?! #junebookbugs

Mehso-so

Once I got used to the I/we bit, and the author got better at it, reading this book went more smoothly. I think I'll treat this as a stand alone and not read any that follow, at least for now. The magic in the story is interesting - it's everywhere such that for those who truly understand life is magic. The Dr. Who reference did help.

It has improved and now there's a small Dr. Who reference, which bumps up my opinion of the book a notch.

My library apparently has one of those if you liked this, you might like this kind of things going on. This popped up so I thought why not, it sounded interesting. Yeah, about that... I don't know about this one. It sort of feels like a book I should bail on. I'm going to give it a little more time and see what happens. If there's not significant improvement I may finish the book but stay away from the series. Hmmm...

Eyelit What's this recommendations system you speak of and how do I get it? Is it through the APL website? Or do you have to talk to a librarian in person? 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Eyelit I don't know. I was looking for other books on the APL website and somewhere in there I got to this one - some sort of because you've read or something, like Amazon has. I don't recall seeing it before and I'm not entirely sure if I saw it right. That's why I was surprised. I want to try again and see if it's real. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @Eyelit I have no idea how to replicate what I did. However, if you go to We Recommend you can get general recommendations AND Personal Picks (brief questionnaire). Whatever I did, who knows??? 8y
Eyelit Cool cool - I'll check that out and see what is what 😄 8y
