Oh Dear Silvia
Oh Dear Silvia: A Novel | Dawn French
10 posts | 15 read | 16 to read
Oh Dear Silvia by Dawn French, the celebrated English actress, bestselling author, and comedian, is the clever, touching, and compelling story of one mysterious woman trapped in a coma after a fall from a balcony. Now, lying unconscious in a hospital bed, Silvia is plagued by a stream of often funny and sometimes poignant visits from friends and family, each of whom knows a different piece of the puzzle that is Silvia Shute. And, as she lies there listening to all of her visitors, the dark and terrible secret shes been hiding for years emerges. Dawn French's Oh Dear Silvia is an emotionally resonant and riveting tale of secrets, forgiveness, remorse, guilt, and love.

Mehso-so

Silvia Shute lies in a coma in a hospital ICU. Hoping to rouse her, family and friends come in to talk to her.

There were some very, very funny parts, mainly involving Silvia's sister, Jo. Other parts I found irritating, particularly Silvia's Indonesian cleaning lady, Tia. I didn't find her particular brand of broken English convincing and the Jamaican nurse's eye dialect was something of a trial as well, even though she had a good storyline.

Just say “Oh Dear, Daria!” My Boxing Day #bookoutlethaul arrived this week. I have no room for these! I also have a Book Outlet gift card from my bro for Christmas 😁

Since these were ordered in 2018, they are definitely on Mount TBR. And yet, this month I‘m mostly reading library borrows. 🤦🏻‍♀️

readordierachel Looks like a good selection! 6y
Eyelit Lol - same on the bookoutlet books being on my mount tbr and yet I‘ve mostly read library books so far this month 😂 6y

This. "Solitude is fine, being alone is fine. Being lonely is not."

#SteepedinStories @drokka @BookishTrish @MPick

Velvetfur I'm walking that line at the moment... And I've been in relationships where I've felt lonely while still in the relationship, which is a weird feeling. 6y

I had a good mail day today! @BookishTrish the latest #SteepedinStories package arrived today! I figured since I am the last to read @drokka's pick, I could reveal the cover/title. I had never heard of this one, and it's a bit of a different read for me, so I'm excited to try it! Trish, the tea you picked looks delicious and perfect for my morning cuppa.

TheKidUpstairs And my Stepmom has nurtured a love of all things Purdy's since I was young, so THANK YOU for the hedgehogs. I bet they don't last the night!

JamieArc I liked this book enough, but I absolutely LOVE Dawn French (The Vicar of Dibley series). 6y
rabbitprincess Mmmmm Purdy's! 6y
BookishTrish Glad the hedgehogs are a hit! I thought they‘d pair well with a British read. 6y

Is it still Wednesday somewhere in Litsyland?

I meant to share this for #Recommendsday yesterday.

This book is funny and sad and heartbreaking and heartmending all at once. I read it a number of years ago and can still remember much about the story and characters.

Give it a go!

(Even though it's Thursday 🙄.)

DGRachel I love Dawn French! 7y
Libby1 And she writes so beautifully, @DGRachel . 7y

The story revolves around a woman in a coma and the relationship her loved ones have/had with her. Some less desirable than others. #taintedlove #junetunz

LauraBrook I need to order this one, it's the only fiction of hers I don't have! 8y
Cinfhen Sounds intriguing, why such cruddy ratings?!? 8y
drokka @Cinfhen I'm not sure. I was surprised to see such a low rating. Maybe there's an expectation that it would laugh out loud funny since the author is a comedienne. Or maybe they were expecting a different book. This one touched me deeply and I probably cried most of the last third of the book. 8y

Oh dear, indeed. I've read reviews that say this book finds heart and humor as it goes on, but it was so... hopeless for me. Blergh, is how it made me feel.
