A laugh-out-loud funny and empowering graphic memoir about growing up and finding your voice. Twelve-year-old Cindy has just dipped a toe into seventh-grade dramawith its complicated friendships, bullies, and cute boyswhen she earns an internship as a cub reporter at a local newspaper in the early 1970s. A (rare) young female reporter takes Cindy under her wing, and Cindy soon learns not only how to write a lede, but also how to respectfully question authority, how to assert herself in a world run by men, andas the Watergate scandal unfoldshow brave reporting and writing can topple a corrupt world leader. Searching for her own scoops, Cindy doesnt always get it right, on paper or in real life. But whether shes writing features about ghost hunters, falling off her bicycle and into her first crush, or navigating shifting friendships, Cindy grows wiser and more confident through every awkward and hilarious mistake.

For middle graders, many things change but some stay the same. Another peek into navigating middle school peer groups, popularity (or lack thereof), and changes with a twist. This was a super fun look at the ‘70s—bell bottoms, tie dye, David Cassidy, Vietnam War, Watergate, ERA, Earth Day, & freedom of the press—in graphic memoir format.

I loved this graphic memoir set in 1972 about a young girl navigating 7th grade and the opportunity to become a cub reporter for her newspaper. I thought the feel of the 70s was very well portrayed as well as the trials of middle school. Important themes of finding your own voice and learning to be comfortable with who you are. Easy and fun read!
Unfortunately I think I resemble this girl‘s mom! Always running behind!

megnews I loved this too 5y
TerriGreen Lol yes that is me as a mom too!! Can‘t wait to get my hands on this when my library opens back up. 5y

I snagged this at the library for my daughter but I may have to read it myself when she‘s done. It‘s a graphic memoir set in the 1970‘s as she is navigating 7th grade and her internship as a cub reporter for the newspaper. #middlegrademarch

I scurried to the library before it closed to pick up some holds that came in. I‘m in the middle of multiple books, but really want to start these too. #library #bookhaul

A super empowering and fun memoir and graphic novel. I love that it focuses on finding your voice and asserting yourself in a male-dominated world. It also focuses on the struggles of middle school including complicated friendships, bullies, and cute boys. It reminds me of the Smile series by Raina Telgemeier. I think my 7th graders will really enjoy it.
Thank you #Netgalley and #algonquinyoungreaders for sharing a digital arc with me.

A cute graphic memoir of 7th grader Cynthia Copeland working alongside a journalist during Watergate. There's a bit about gender inequality, although I wish it dove into it a little more. It's a great coming-of-age story and aims to inspire kids to go out and make their dreams come true. I love the illustrations, and can't wait to see the final in full-color in January!

ScientistSam Ooh, I'll keep an eye out for this for the kids on my present-giving list! 5y
Kaylamburson It's a fun one for sure! @ScientistSam 5y

4 🌟 This is an interesting look at a girl whose teacher tells her she should write, and she goes for it. She lives in an extremely “traditional” household. Her brothers are expected to be businessmen and make a living. She is only allowed to wear dresses or skirts. I hate the father in this story. He so clearly favors the boys and wants his daughter to be his little princess forever, but I love this girls tenacity.
