Plastic
Plastic: A Toxic Love Story | Susan Freinkel
5 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
Plastic built the modern world. Where would we be without bike helmets, baggies, toothbrushes, and pacemakers? But a century into our love affair with plastic, were starting to realize its not such a healthy relationship. Plastics draw on dwindling fossil fuels, leach harmful chemicals, litter landscapes, and destroy marine life. As journalist Susan Freinkel points out in this engaging and eye-opening book, were nearing a crisis point. Weve produced as much plastic in the past decade as we did in the entire twentieth century. Were drowning in the stuff, and we need to start making some hard choices. Freinkel gives us the tools we need with a blend of lively anecdotes and analysis. She combs through scientific studies and economic data, reporting from China and across the United States to assess the real impact of plastic on our lives. She tells her story through eight familiar plastic objects: comb, chair, Frisbee, IV bag, disposable lighter, grocery bag, soda bottle, and credit card. Her conclusion: we cannot stay on our plastic-paved path. And we dont have to. Plastic points the way toward a new creative partnership with the material we love to hate but cant seem to live without.

Wow. Got the audio & print from the library. Thought I would mostly do audio, but am so in to this book I will mostly read so I can absorb it. Only 25 pages in but the history and how plastics changed our society is absolutely fascinating. Plastic made billiards/pool a “common man” game when the balls no longer needed to be made of plastic. And shellac was once made@from beetles. It took 15,000 beetles 6 months to make a pound of shellac!

SamAnne And loving my porch heat lamp so I can read outside when it‘s 38 degrees out! 4y

Something I learned from a paperback-swap group: put your book in a plastic bag (grocery bag will do) before putting it in your outer envelope. Never know if it'll get rained on 🌂🌦🌨☔️💧#covertocover #litsygoespostal #gameoftomes

Zelma Used to use Paperbackswap and Bookmooch constantly. Always wrap in Saran Wrap before putting it in an envelope. I also learned that people will give you a bad rating if you don't. 🙄😌 8y
