Week at the Airport
Week at the Airport | Alain de Botton
1 post | 3 to read
From the bestselling author of "The Art of Travel" comes a wittily intriguing exploration of the strange "non-place" that he believes is the imaginative center of our civilization. Given unprecedented access to one of the world s busiest airports as a writer-in-residence, Alain de Botton found it to be a showcase for many of the major crosscurrents of the modern world from our faith in technology to our destruction of nature, from our global interconnectedness to our romanticizing of the exotic. He met travelers from all over and spoke with everyone from baggage handlers to pilots to the airport chaplain. Weaving together these conversations and his own observations of everything from the poetry of room service menus to the eerie silence in the middle of the runway at midnight de Botton has produced an extraordinary meditation on a place that most of us never slow down enough to see clearly. Lavishly illustrated in color by renowned photographer Richard Baker, "A Week at the Airport "reveals the airport in all its turbulence and soullessness and yes even beauty."

Despite 30% of flights being cancelled today, mine somehow seems to be on time (though we‘re supposed to board in 15 minutes and there‘s no plane yet.) On one hand, I‘m very happy that I won‘t be spending the night in the airport but on the other, I‘m sad that I won‘t have an excuse to break my book buying ban. There were a few I wouldn‘t have minded picking up.

GloVerdino I‘ve done some damage in airport bookshops, so I know how you feel! 6y
Amandajoy You should get one just in case the plane is delayed. Beat the rush. 6y
CouronneDhiver I was driving between cities today and gave up... staying overnight and trying again tomorrow 6y

janeycanuck @Amandajoy I really should have - we ended up taking off about 2 hours late but they did it in constant ten and twenty minute increments so you felt like you couldn‘t leave the gate 😠 6y
janeycanuck @GloVerdino there‘s just something extra delicious about airport books!! 6y
janeycanuck @CouronneDhiver Hope it‘s better for you today - I was flying out of Pearson. My drive to the airport was much better than expected but still took longer than usual. Safe travels!! 6y
CouronneDhiver We‘ll be ok, I think. We‘ve got about 4 hours left to go today. 6y
