The Other Windsor Girl
The Other Windsor Girl: A Novel of Love, Royalty, Whiskey, and Cigarettes | Georgie Blalock
If you love The Crown, then this is the book for you! Diana, Catherine, Meghanglamorous Princess Margaret outdid them all. Springing into post-World War II society, and quite naughty and haughty, she lived in a whirlwind of fame and notoriety. Georgie Blalock captures the fascinating, fast-living princess and her set as seen through the eyes of one of her ladies-in-waiting. In dreary, post-war Britain, Princess Margaret captivates everyone with her cutting edge fashion sense and biting quips. The royal socialite, cigarette holder in one hand, cocktail in the other, sparkles in the company of her glittering entourage of wealthy young aristocrats known as the Margaret Set, but her outrageous lifestyle conflicts with her place as Queen Elizabeths younger sister. Can she be a dutiful princess while still dazzling the world on her own terms? Post-war Britain isnt glamorous for The Honorable Vera Strathmore. While writing scandalous novels, she dreams of living and working in New York, and regaining the happiness she enjoyed before her fianc was killed in the war. A chance meeting with the Princess changes her life forever. Vera amuses the princess, and whator whoMargaret wants, Margaret gets. Soon, Vera gains Margarets confidence and the privileged position of second lady-in-waiting to the Princess. Thrust into the center of Margarets social and royal life, Vera watches the princesss love affair with dashing Captain Peter Townsend unfurl. But while Margaret, as a member of the Royal Family, is not free to act on her desires, Vera soon wants the freedom to pursue her own dreams. As time and Princess Margarets scandalous behavior progress, both women will be forced to choose between status, duty, and love

I know little of Princess Margaret from other sources so I don't know how accurate this portrayal is but it has me convinced that she was a thoroughly unlikable woman. It's weird because this isn't even her story- it's about her fictional lady in waiting, Vera, who I didn't entirely like either. The book was entertaining but I feel like I wasted my time on it.

Finishing my audio book and starting my Starry Night Lego set. It‘s still so hot and humid here I needed something else to do so o have saved this beauty of a set long enough

ncsufoxes I love this set. I haven‘t seen Starry Night in person (yet). But many years ago I saw the Van Gogh exhibition at the National Gallery of Art & it was amazing. My minor in college was Art History (Impressionist & Italian Renaissance were my favorite periods). Can‘t wait to see the finished product! 2y
SleepyDragon I need that Lego set. 2y
mcctrish @SleepyDragon you do need this set 😂😂 2y

mcctrish @ncsufoxes I have seen it in person and been to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. I took art all through high school and then clothing and textiles at uni, I have always had goals to see the art that I studied irl. I am so hoping Lego makes more of these sets 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 and I‘d love more funko artists too 2y
SleepyDragon @mcctrish I added it to my Lego wishlist (kinda like a TBR, but "to be built" lol), right behind the globe, bonsai tree, and Stones logo. I just need all my kids to move out first so I have room. 2y
mcctrish @SleepyDragon kids take up too much room, I agree! That globe is on my list too 2y

Today I went and got my first manicure in more than a decade. I‘m a nail biter and have been my whole life. I spent the month of July, my birth month, trying to stop with the end goal being a fancy polish colour. I hate dirty nails so summer and gardening is a hot mess time to give oneself this challenge ( did you know soaking in polident gives you white nails? It saved me!) there will be many books and manicure shots henceforth 🤣🤣

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Love it!! 💅 when I was younger I bit my nails and I don‘t remember how I stopped, but somehow I did 🙌🏻 2y
Cortg Congrats! I‘m not a biter, but I hate any length so I‘m always cutting them super short. I love the blue! Enjoy 😊 2y
AmyG Perfect color for summer! 2y

mcctrish @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Covid has certainly helped in my case 🤣🤣 2y
mcctrish @Cortg I totally hear you about the length and truthfully I used to hate how polish felt on my nails ( not my toes for some reason) I am not sold on keeping them this long and I‘m not sure I can afford to maintain this professional elegance either 🤣🤣 (edited) 2y
mcctrish @AmyG whatever it‘s real name is 🤷🏻‍♀️ I‘m calling it swimming pool blue 🤣🤣 2y
LeahBergen They look great! And I‘ve never heard of that Polident trick. 😮 2y
mcctrish @LeahBergen my manicure person said she learned that in school, a lot of times the older ladies just wanted nail care, not polish but your nails yellow with age. So they‘d soak with polident #themoreyouknow (edited) 2y
LeahBergen That‘s good to know as I get into my own “older ladies” years. 😆 2y
mcctrish @LeahBergen I‘ve done it twice this month ( cooking and gardening and I don‘t know what else made a few of my nails disgusting ) 2y
Tamra I had no idea! They look fabulous! 2y
Cathythoughts Nails look great. Thanks for the tip 👍🏻😁 2y
mcctrish @Tamra it‘s a game changer 👏🏻👏🏻 and thank you 2y
mcctrish @Cathythoughts thank you so much and you are welcome, a little soak while you read maybe ? 2y

I will say that it never dawned on me that members of Princess Margaret's Set were ladies in waiting and paid to be in proximity and available... So that was eye-opening. I did wish that maybe there would have been more to Vera's authorship storyline... I mean, if her novels are what drew Princess Margaret to Vera, as a fan of her books, then why not encourage her to write more or work together on ideas and storylines.

I thought that I would give it a shot and I really enjoy reading about royalty and history...but it was just too light and fluffy. I picked it up and it felt almost as though I was reading a young adult novel with the consistent worrying about fitting it, wearing the right clothing, but also reaching a career goal.

#bookreview ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Basically the Princess Margaret parts of The Crown in a book with an additional character of a Lady-in-Waiting. But I love The Crown and didn‘t mind at all reading the same stories from the Lady-in-Waiting‘s perspective. #royalfamily #anglophilia

If you're obsessed with The Crown and can't get enough of reading more like it, then you will probably like this. On the other hand if you've watched The Crown you've seen a lot of this. I fall into that category, plus I found Original Character hard to like. Also I found the phrase 'Buck Palace' annoying for some reason. Plus I always find Fictional Accounts of Real Life People problematic. What's Fact? What's Fiction?

Crinoline_Laphroaig So why did I read it? #coverlove 4y
CarolynM It is a good cover. 4y

I made my own book flight of a nonfiction and a fiction book related to or about Princess Margaret. I‘m looking forward to both. Has anyone read either of these?

BookNAround I read Lady in Waiting (ordered from England) back in December so I could give it to my mom for Christmas. I was a bit disappointed, tbh. 5y
JenReadsAlot I have Lady in Waiting on my list. 5y

Finished a book! Since my book group will now be meeting via Facebook and the questions have been posted for a week (all members except me are #staying home ), I‘ll be able to answer the questions at my leisure. Probably this will actually be a meeting (?)where the book gets talked about more than our lives. I enjoyed the book too, knowing very little about Princess Margaret. It‘s a fictionalized tale but still worth the read!

gradcat Hope you‘re having a nice weekend! ♥️ 5y
CocoReads @gradcat so far so good. Had a video chat with some friends, not much else besides reading. I‘m actually taking a bath right now to de stress (and warm my toes up) hoping your weekend is good too! 5y
gradcat @CocoReads Baths are always good for whatever ails you, in my humble opinion! 🛀🏽 ♥️😂 5y

It‘s snowing out and I have an early shift in the morning so tea with tonight‘s #bathnbook. Seems fitting. Also it‘s my book group book. We‘ve moved to a private Facebook group since the #worldisclosed but I should read the book anyway. Also it was one of my suggestions. Can I get it done in a week? Depends on how the week goes.

1. Of course. That‘s why publishers have art departments after all.
2. Done
3. NPR and The Skimm but I try to minimize exposure because it generally makes me ragey.
4. Only use an alarm when the kid has to be gotten up for school because hubby‘s not home to do the honors.
