Patience and Fortitude
Patience and Fortitude: Power, Real Estate, and the Fight to Save a Public Library | Scott Sherman
7 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
A riveting investigation of a beloved library caught in the crosshairs of real estate, power, and the peoples interestsby the reporter who broke the story In a series of cover stories for The Nation magazine, journalist Scott Sherman uncovered the ways in which Wall Street logic almost took down one of New York Citys most beloved and iconic institutions: the New York Public Library. In the years preceding the 2008 financial crisis, the librarys leaders forged an audacious plan to sell off multiple branch libraries, mutilate a historic building, and send millions of books to a storage facility in New Jersey. Scholars, researchers, and readers would be out of luck, but real estate developers and New Yorks Mayor Bloomberg would get what they wanted. But when the story broke, the people fought back, as famous writers, professors, and citizens groups came together to defend a national treasure. Rich with revealing interviews with key figures, Patience and Fortitude is at once a hugely readable history of the librarys secret plans, and a stirring account of a rare triumph against the forces of money and power. From the Hardcover edition.

Finally realized a longtime dream of visiting Patience and Fortitude at NYPL. This historic building lived up to the (incredibly high) expectations I had.

AmyG Glad you are enjoying it. I miss NYC. 2y
Ruthiella I always get think of the movie Breakfast at Tiffany‘s when I see the lions and the library steps! 😀 2y
dabbe When I would teach the hero's quest archetype to my high school students, I always had a picture of the lions as the classic “guardians to the threshold“ idea. No better example than these glorious statues. ❣️ 2y

Classes start today but I got one last book in yesterday! Overall, this was well-written and had a lot of interesting information. However, the early part of the book flips back and forth in time which is one of my pet peeves so I personally found that annoying.

I have visited the wonderful Rose Reading Room at the NYPL which could be the only reason I trudged through this dry account of the library‘s latest problems. Loved the title, but that‘s about all of this book. If you are a reader in NYC, this book may interest you.

#TBRtemptation post 8! Holy Power To the People, Batman! Check this out!!! The Nation ran a series of cover stories detailing how the NYCPL was in the crosshairs for destruction. Prior to 2008, the library's leaders forged a plan to sell many branch locations, mutilate the iconic Bryant Park building, & send millions of book to storage in NJ. Readers would be lost, & Bloomberg's cronies would win. The people triumphed. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

What a delight it was to find among the august and hallowed halls of the New York Public Library an utterly charming children's reading room with big books, small furniture, brightly colored murals and, yes, Patience and Fortitude made of Lego! 😻This is also the home of the original stuffed animals of Winnie the Pooh, et al, but sadly their display was temporarily closed. And spotted this book in the shop —it looks good! One more for the TBR😺
