Torpedoed: The True Story of the World War II Sinking of "the Children's Ship"
Torpedoed: The True Story of the World War II Sinking of "the Children's Ship" | Deborah Heiligman
8 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
From award-winning author Deborah Heiligman comes Torpedoed, a true account of the attack and sinking of the passenger ship SS City of Benares, which was evacuating children from England during WWII. Amid the constant rain of German bombs and the escalating violence of World War II, British parents by the thousands chose to send their children out of the country: the wealthy, independently; the poor, through a government relocation program called CORB. In September 1940, passenger liner SS City of Benares set sail for Canada with one hundred children on board. When the war ships escorting the Benares departed, a German submarine torpedoed what became known as the Children's Ship. Out of tragedy, ordinary people became heroes. This is their story.

I didn't know Torpedoed was a nonfiction book, so I decided to read Lifeboat 12 as well. Both books were excellent. I had never heard of the story the children ship before. Such a tragedy!

dabbe Both are on the spreadsheet! 🤩 14mo

BarbaraBB Wondering too about the family reading challenge 🤍 3y
Reviewsbylola Flo is into it. G could not give a shit. 😭 They‘re doing a book club for summer school though and so most of their reading is for that! Their class meets once a week and they get their own copy of the book to keep. They‘re chapter books so it‘s been taking us the full week to read each one! @Cinfhen @Megabooks @BarbaraBB 3y
BarbaraBB They are like us! Multitasking two challenges at the same time 😂. No wonder G doesn‘t give a shit 😉 3y
Reviewsbylola She is shocked that anyone could be expected to read over summer break. 😂 @BarbaraBB 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola you know, some summers you couldn‘t drag me out of the library and other summers I just wanted to be outside or playing Nintendo or whatever, so I can relate to both of them! I‘m glad G has a reason to keep up her reading, though, even if she‘s not super happy about it. 😬 3y
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 I‘m totally NOT SURPRISED!! G sounds like my kids…they wanted to know if they could just watch the movie because there was no way they were reading books ON THEIR VACATION!! If it‘s vacation don‘t give homework. At least you‘re reading and enjoying ❤️ 3y

A few days ago I asked the girls to pick out my next two reads. I have no idea what made them choose these particular books (G‘s choice on left, F‘s on right,) but I‘m so glad they did because neither of these would have been read anytime soon.

Castles has very few reviews and of those, most are lukewarm at best. But shockingly, I loved it! Now I‘m reading Torpedoed and cannot put it down!

LeahBergen That‘s a great way of picking your next read. 😆 3y
Reviewsbylola It was pretty scary. One of them almost grabbed a chunky NF. 😂 @LeahBergen 3y
BarbaraBB That is great! 3y
MicheleinPhilly I once asked J to pick my first read of the year and she came downstairs with a 900 page brick I ended up sending to your sister. @emilyhaldi 3y
Reviewsbylola Lolol, I was just looking at that title last night and saw her post! Too funny! I decided I definitely do not need to buy it. Also, brian is supposed to pick a book for me too and I KNOW he‘s going to pull that BS. @MicheleinPhilly 3y

We went waaaaaaay overboard at the school‘s book fair this week. I may or may not have told my kids they could buy any books they wanted to try and inspire their summer reading. I‘m personally not a huge fan of middle grade and YA, but I did manage to come home with these goodies for myself.

LeslieO Those books look so good! 4y

I'm reasonably sure there's stuff I'm supposed to be doing today, but I'm awfully tempted to stay right here in my bed with Deborah Heiligman's new book, Torpedoed, for the foreseeable future.

This is an ARC of an upcoming middle-grade nonfiction about the sinking of a ship during WWII that was carrying children away from the British war zone. Such a tragic story and a reminder of the heartbreaking impact of war.
