As a longtime fan of the podcast, I had to get the Bowery Boys book. It did not disappoint. It is such a great reference to New York history, neighborhood by neighborhood. Features of the podcast carry over into the book including "Situate the Listener/Reader" & puns. Must like puns. ?

Neighborhood chapters begin with a map and intro, so it would be perfect for exploring. I can't wait to one day be able to tote it along on my own NY adventure.

AmyG I used to watch old movies of the Bowery Boys on Sunday morning, when I was a kid. I wonder if these movies influenced the podcast and book. I will have to check it out. (edited) 7y

mabell @AmyG The Bowery Boys (podcasters/authors) took their name from the 19th century gang - legendary in Gangs of New York. Was that the basis for the movies you watched? 7y

Thanks for the tag @RachelAmphlett ! I love any excuse to post pics of Bella. Since she is usually comatose in the photos I post, this is one when she is being a goofball. We call this her "sharking" - she rolls on her back snorting and rubbing her face in the blankets - one of the only times you can see her teeth, hence shark. It's very dramatic. ?

The tagged book is the only paperback I am reading at present. #petsandpaperbacks

The current weather in the Northeast makes me think of one of my favorite podcast episodes The Bowery Boys - The Great Blizzard of 1888. It is an amazing and terrifying story of New York being blindsided by a massive blizzard - in March. There was no forecast to give advance warning the spring weather would abruptly turn into something else. Wow.

I love the Bowery Boys podcast, and I also have their book all set for whenever I make it to NY 🤞

I've really been enjoying this so far. Laid out as a "design your own historical walking tour" of Manhattan, it contains some fascinating stories, some well-known and some obscure. In a lot of cases I wish they had included more detail, but that would take the fun out of doing my own research!
