Ghost Wars
Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan and Bin Laden | Steve Coll
15 posts | 14 read | 25 to read
The news-breaking book that has sent schockwaves through the White House, Ghost Wars is the most accurate and revealing account yet of the CIA's secret involvement in al-Qaeada's evolution. Prize-winning journalist Steve Coll has spent years reporting from the Middle East, accessed previously classified government files and interviewed senior US officials and foreign spymasters. Here he gives the full inside story of the CIA's covert funding of an Islamic jihad against Soviet forces in Afghanistan, explores how this sowed the seeds of bn Laden's rise, traces how he built his global network and brings to life the dramatic battles within the US government over national security. Above all, he lays bare American intelligence's continual failure to grasp the rising threat of terrrorism in the years leading to 9/11 - and its devastating consequences.

#LittensUnderstand So , made a first run at cleaning this bookcase . Not really one in good order, figured I‘d cull a few I didn‘t want to keep . 72 inches high , 24 inches wide , 6 shelves. Cull total :3 !🙄😂

Graywacke Fantastic! 2y
Brooke_H I was literally confused for a second. “How did a pic of my shelf get on here?” 😂 2y

Outstanding. In my opinion, best book I've read on Afghanistan & our involvement pre & post 9-11. Written in 2004, so I know much has changed, but it was comprehensive in its time.

Probably the definitive account of covert operations in Afghanistan from the 70‘s up until 9/11. If that‘s interesting to you, this is your book.

#Afghanistan #augustisatrip This Book won the Pulitzer for General Nonfiction in 2005.Still on the TBR.I want to know what happened,I know I will be angry about what the CIA got wrong ,angry and sad for the innocent who are victims of the warfare and the gamesmanship.

Russia, the United States, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia have been playing a deadly game of “Who rides the tiger” in Afghanistan for many years. While the United States has waffled in involvement, the Taliban and Bin Laden were highly focused and goal oriented. I am pessimistic about the outcome of any wars on terror.

Nebklvr When one side is always playing a CYA game of politics and has no clear objective and the other side is fueled by specific religious fanatical doctrine.... 7y

Short-term solutions lead to long-term problems...sadly, the information was available at the time, they just chose to ignore it because it didn‘t fit the political majority‘s views at the time.....
