A class of 5th graders writes all genres of poetry to be placed in a time capsule-their school will be demolished at year‘s end. Beautiful story, so human and vulnerable.

I read this novel-in-verse for the children‘s book club I run.
It‘s made up of journal entries, assigned to a fifth-grade class by their hippie English teacher. Their school‘s in danger of being torn-down to make way for a supermarket & she sees that they might need a creative outlet for their feelings. This conceit allows the author to develop a whole cast of characters in not-so-many words, & play with form in a kid-friendly, accessible way. 🤗
What a fun read! The fictional fifth grade class of Emerson Elementary will be the last before a shopping center will replace the school. The eighteen students write poems (which will go in a time capsule) documenting their year and their attempt to save their school. Filled with diversity, the poems capture the spirit of the children. Such a delightful, original book for children and adults alike!
The story of a year in a fifth grade class written in poems from the eighteen students? I'm definitely in!😀😀
A novel in poetry -- I love this Concrete poem.
