Those few who are chosen must pay for their stay with a story from their past - a Declaration for the island's vast library. What happens to your Declaration after you leave the island is none of your concern. From the monsters of Ancient Greece to the atrocities of World War II, from heroes to villains with their seers and sidekicks by their sides, Skein Island looks through the roles we play, and how they form and divide us. Powerful and disturbing, it is a story over which the characters will fight for control. Until you realise the true enemy is the story itself.

This one came up on my new & available on the Library app, so I gave it a go. Whew, more than I bargained for!

Genuinely surprising & unsettling. This book efficiently dispenses with the 'big reveal' about 1/3 through and then proceeds to sucker-punch you not once but several times in quick succession. I'll be thinking about this one for a long long time to come.

Aliya Whiteley is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. After devouring The Beauty earlier this year, I was thrilled to see this re-issue of an old book of hers. Skein Island invites women to a week-long retreat, free of men and normal responsibilities. It‘s free. Payment is in the form of a declaration - a life story that each woman writes and that‘s put away in a secret library never to be seen again. *cue creepy music*
