Absolutely none of my other reading plans sounded even remotely appealing after finishing Finlay Donovan, (I‘m such a mood reader) so I went to my shelves. I love Recipes for Love and Murder on Acorn TV, so I‘m hoping I love the book even more.

This month‘s book club pick from the prompt, “set in Africa.” So far, I‘m not hooked…I hope it gets better.

Wasn‘t really sure what to expect with this book. I saw it on sale and thought I‘d give it a try and I‘m glad I did! It was a different twist to a mystery set in South Africa. Just found out it‘s part of a series so I‘ll have to check the others out ☺️

Mystery number two of the month.

Tannie Maria is an interesting character who cried when Nelson Mandela died, adores her coworkers at the local paper, and can whip up a fabulous meal at the drop of a hat. A harrowing confrontation with a particularly despicable villain puts this at the grittier end of the cozy spectrum, but other characteristics are there. A feisty heroine who ignores the warnings of the police, hints of romance, and yummy food.

Goal done for #SuperSeptember

It‘s time for another set your own goals readathon! Given my track record lately, and knowing that I have a lot on my plate IRL next week, my goal will be to read the tagged book. It‘s the September selection for bookclub which meets on the 21st. If I finish that in good time, then I‘ll head to something else!

The first book in a series, set in South Africa. Tannie Maria works at a newspaper where she is an agony aunt with a difference. She also gives each person a personal recipe. A women is killed and Tannie Maria along with the other women at the newspaper start to investigate, alongside the police. It does feature domestic abuse.
I really enjoyed this one and will look out the other books.

I really liked this book! I tend to read really heavy, old books (which I love!) and I was trying to branch out and read something a little lighter, but very creative and different. This is set in South Africa and Sally Andrew is a unique voice with a neat personality that shines through her writing. 🤗

Currently reading found it on my bookshelf, really enjoying it so far. 😍

This book felt very fresh to me- probably because I can't recall reading a book set in South Africa. I really enjoyed the setting and the bits of history and background scattered about. Also I adore Tannie Maria, and her love affair with food is a thing of beauty.

This was a cute story! I mostly listened to the audio and the narrator, Sandra Prinsloo, was excellent. It‘s a mystery with drama, love, and a lot of food references mixed in. There‘s another book with the same characters that I will read soon! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

“I wasn‘t running, because I don‘t believe in running” — I don‘t know why this made me bust out laughing. Lol, maybe because I have a love/hate relationship with running 😆

Pairs well with: comfort food (try a recipe from the back!!), sturdy leather shoes (shop Oliberte), tailgate picnics, truck preferred.

Small town mystery with riveting characters, twists and turns, decadent food writing, an unexpected finale, and a love interest on the side. The author has some tricks up her sleeve, a few were overused (Tannie Maria's constant referral to food in a crisis). A bit like a modern female-driven Sherlock and Holmes.

As “cozy” mysteries goes this book (the first in a series) appealed to much more then Alexander McCall Smith‘s, No 1 Ladies Detective Agency. It is full of food and the recipes are included. I can‘t recommend any of them yet but I am inspired to try them.

Man, do I love a cozy mystery set in a foreign locale. I bought this because of a digital deal and the prompting and tempting approval of Litens. I'm enjoying it fully so far. I love being dumped into another culture and place within the context of a murder mystery.

A fun small town mystery. Cozy and foodie with Tannie M's voice giving moments of heart and whimsy. Her food was almost a character in its own right. It was also fun to meet characters from the South African town, Ladismith, and to see Afrikaans words and descriptions of the countryside be part of the story. I think fans of Miss Fisher or No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency will ❤this

The only problem with this #cozy #mystery is that I want Tannie M to feed me all the recipes she's talking about! Chocolate cake! Welsh rarebit! (See above for a picture because I had to Google Welsh rarebit.) Maybe reading this so close to New Years Resolution time was a mistake!

Good book, tea and a box of tissues. Two out of three aren't bad

Nope. No more. I refuse to do any more adulting today. So I made a key lime pie and found a book.

I'm not generally a mystery fan, so when I say I loved this, that means something. Tannie Maria is delightful, Klein Karoo leaps off the page, and foodies will walk away ready to cook. So, so great.
