Me & Emma (Original)
Me & Emma (Original) | Elizabeth Flock
Narrated with simplicity and unabashed honesty, Elizabeth Flock's critically acclaimed New York Times bestselling novel Me & Emma is a vivid portrayal of a child's indomitable spirit, her incredible courage and the heartbreaking loss of innocence In many ways, Carrie Parker is like any other eight-year-old--playing make-believe, going to school, dreaming of faraway places. But even in her imagination, she can't pretend away the hardships of her impoverished North Carolina home or protect her younger sister, Emma. As the big sister, Carrie is determined to do anything to keep Emma safe from a life of neglect and abuse at the hands of their drunken stepfather, Richard--abuse their momma can't seem to see, let alone stop. But after the sisters' plan to run away from home unravels, Carrie's world takes a shocking turn--and one shattering moment ultimately reveals a truth that leaves everyone reeling.

Bailedbailed

I am sure I knew what the twist would be by page 14. It‘s very obvious. I haven‘t technically confirmed that I‘m right but I‘ll take a peek at the ending at some point to see for sure.

But predictability is not the biggest issue. I am bored by the story. I know it‘s an important one. I want to like it more than I do. But with so many other compelling books calling my name, I can‘t rationalize forcing myself through this any further.

Megabooks Same here! #agreed 5y
SaturnDoo I bet you're right 😂 I remember reading this several years ago. If it hadn't of been a buddy read, I would have bailed too. But I stuck it out until the end 😝😕🤢👎👎 5y
abookishbutterfly @SaturnDoo Yep! I checked the ending this morning. That was the most blatantly obvious plot twist ever! 5y

When you read a book, do you hear your own voice in your head or something different, based on the narrator/characters?

It most cases, I hear my own voice, but when a type of accent is very clear through word usage, I do end up hearing that accent in my head. For example, I read Little Darlings with a British accent and when I started this last night, it was definitely a thick southern accent.

SoapboxEdits I‘m the same way. The voice in my head is the same, just the patterns and accents are different. 6y
CouronneDhiver Hmm... never really thought about it! 🤔 Accents come fairly easily to me... not sure if that‘s a result of being well traveled? Bilingual? Super interesting! 6y
SaturnDoo Same as you. 😊❤👍 6y

Pickpick

I literally just finished this book five minutes ago, so I‘m still processing.

This novel is told from the point of view (and in the voice of) eight-year-old Carrie, whose life is about as bleak as they come. The one companion she can count on is her little sister, Emma.

The book is somewhat slow-moving for the first two-thirds, but once things start happening, they happen fast.

The ending made my jaw drop. Glad I stuck with it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I prefer the feel, the smell, the experience of reading an actual, physical book. But as a late-night reader who has uncontrollable urges to hurl floppy, uncooperative book lights and whose husband likes to sleep ... This is how much of my reading happens now.

This book is the February selection for one of my book clubs. It looks intriguing.

Mehso-so

Emma and her sister are trying to survive day by day with a mother who doesn't really care and an abusive step-father.

Very sad and I figured out the "twist" about 50 pages in.

Carrie is the ultimate #unreliablenarrator, magnified by the fact that she's 8 years old. A chilling, dark and twisty tale. #maybookflowers.
