The Bear
The Bear | Andrew Krivak
26 posts | 33 read | 24 to read
In an Edenic future, a girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. They possess a few remnants of civilization: some books, a pane of glass, a set of flint and steel, a comb. The father teaches the girl how to fish and hunt, the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. But when the girl finds herself alone in an unknown landscape, it is a bear that will lead her backhome through a vast wilderness that offers the greatest lessons of all, if she can only learn to listen. A cautionary tale of human fragility, of love and loss,The Bear is a stunning tribute to the beauty of nature's dominion.

What a strange little book. It was so lush and comforting. It was full of grief and full of little shoots of new growth.

Fables aren‘t normally by type of story, but I‘m so happy I read it. The writing was so descriptive I felt like I was in the forest the entire time. I truly enjoyed this!

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 256.

Wow...just wow! Krivak slowly and tenderly swallows you with his depictions of the great and quiet forest. Before you know it, you‘re surrounded by trees feeling the cold water of a spring washing over your bare toes with the smell of pine and rich soil in the air. I loved every minute of this book, even though it took me a lot longer than intended because of school!

I‘m finally sufficiently recovered from a long and grueling year of grad school to want to read for fun again! Gotta catch up ok some cool titles I‘ve heard about but been too busy to read. 📚🤓

First thing on the list, The Bear by Andrew Krivak. I left off with 20 pages to go right before school started and really wanna see how it ends!🐻

abookishbutterfly It‘s such a beautiful, quiet read! 3y

This reminded me so much of The Snow Child. It feels like a prequel to that book. A young girl lives in the woods with her father and he teaches her how to survive. The descriptions of the wilderness around them pulls you in though it didn‘t have the same impact on me as Snow Child.
* I listened to it during the #readathon yesterday and only took a break to attend a Viking fest. 😆

Between Pick and So-so: 4/5 🌟 In an Edenic future, a girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. The father teaches the girl how to fish and hunt, the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. Great premise, lyrical, beautiful narration. But I couldn‘t get on board with the animals‘ roles...

This truly reminded me of a fairy tale. It was enchantingly written. Although meant to be post apocalyptic, it never delved into what happened and how humans died out. Normally I want to know everything that has happened but I really didn‘t mind the unexplained in this case.

❤ lovely little fable about a father and daughter the two last remaining humans on earth. A story about loss, survival and the beauty and generosity of nature. Stunning descriptive writing. I did not want this to end. 🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻

Short, beautiful story full of rich imagery that will make you feel like your in the woods. The writing is alluring and reads almost like a fairytale.

For the animal lovers out there though, this one has lots of descriptive passages about hunting and preparing meat for eating.

The story is told in a simplistic yet literary way. It‘s incredibly beautiful and made my eyes well up with tears more than once.

I don't think this is a book for everyone but it is a book for me: lots of beautiful nature descriptions and descriptions of finding and preparing food in the wild mixed with some helpful forest creatures in folk lore fashion. It's a little dystopian (as the book opens we know the girl and her father are the last two humans) but it's not one of those books about finding out why these are the last two survivors, only in watching them survive.

DNF @ 74%. I just couldn‘t do it anymore. There are some compelling scenes with the unnamed father and his daughter up on the mountain, but my mind wandered all over the place after The Big Thing happened. So I‘m stopping. I initially chose this story because nature is featured heavily. But sadly it wasn‘t enough for me.

Length is 4 hrs, 0 min, Unabridged. Narrator is Eric Jason Martin.

An enchanting read. It reminds me a bit of being a child & being told stories around the campfire. I had been expecting a book that was a bit more dystopian, but was pleasantly surprised that most of the story could have easily occured in the wilderness of a non-dystopian world. Part realistic fiction, part fable or folktale, this story of a girl & her father had a beautiful simplicity to it. I really enjoyed its focus on human nature & survival.

A girl & her father are in the wilderness, the last of humankind. An accident during a trek means the girl must find her way home alone...save for the help of a talking bear. A mix of dystopian & magical realism, this was a surprisingly great read. The writing style is very accessible & there is a LOT of specific outdoors & survival information fitting compactly, but smoothly in the narrative. I was engrossed by this tale from beginning to end.

There is no one left on Earth except a girl and her father in this dream like tale. The girl and her father journey to the ocean to gather supplies. During this journey, the girl finds herself alone and a long way from home. A bear appears to help her on her journey and teaches her many things.

This book was just okay to me and I found myself quite bored.

Enchanting, quiet and moving, this fable-like novel is about the last two humans on earth. While the premise is bleak, the story is driven by beautiful descriptions of nature and magic realism that leaves you with a sense of hope and comfort.

Much thanks to NetGalley and Bellevue Books for this advanced copy of The Bear. I loved The Road to which this has been compared. It releases in February 2020.
