The first part of the story begins in 1969 and we follow the story of three teenage orphans who spend their days helping in a civilian hospital. This part ends with the evacuation and from here we follow their totally different life paths. The story is told by different narrators, driven by external events, the structure is fragmented, the timeline skips decades, which makes the story dynamic ... but this form of narration is ... 👇

Simona ... also what does not allow for deeper characterisation. Sensual prose, a dynamic and interesting story about a part of Lao history unknown to me, but I really missed a more complex characterisation. Between pick and so-so. 4y

This novel follows 3 orphans in #laos during their civil war, and what happens to them afterwards.

I did enjoy this book, and the writing is gorgeous but I think I would have preferred this had I read it rather than listening to it. I felt like I lost a few plot points on audio, particularly with the leaps backwards and forwards in time.

Warning - it is rather brutal in places as you would expect from the subject matter.

BarbaraBB Where do you find all those obscure books? Of most of them I‘ve berber even heard! You are so good at this! 4y
Librarybelle The cover of this book intrigues me every time I see it! 4y
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB - I do a lot of research on Goodreads and Google in general then cross-check what is available where... this one is on Scribd. 4y
squirrelbrain @Librarybelle - the cover and title fit the book really well. The 3 children have to go out rescuing people from vast minefields. 4y

The story itself about the aftermath of a war torn Laos was really heartbreaking and fascinating. The reason I didn‘t love this book is that I found it to be confusing at times, I didn‘t always know what was going on and I wasn‘t sure if I was missing something or if they mysterious writing was intentional.

The insane amount of bombies that the US dropped in Laos in a silent act of horrific proportions astounds me. I am so relieved Obama finally apologized. This is a quiet book that was about a violent time.

4/5
Paul Yoon is excellent at driving narrative from a distance. His tone and style is quiet yet deliberate. And in his latest novel, we see how a war-torn Laos in the 1960s through the eyes of three orphans – Alisak, Prany and Noi. Tied together by their shared grief, the teens find ways to survive together. This spans decades with each chapter acting like a vignette for a character. I really enjoyed this one.

Finished the last new title I bought on random impulse in a physical bookstore before the quarantine. Something about this title‘s smallness (as well as the blurb) appealed to me. Yoon‘s novel tells the story of three orphans in Laos and their experience at a field hospital during the Cambodian struggle. If you‘re looking for a plot- or character-driven narrative, this isn‘t it, but Yoon‘s prose is still devastatingly beautiful.

Between pick/so-so. The writing is beautiful, but I‘m having trouble putting my finger on what I didn‘t like about the book. The book centers around three orphans during the wartime 1969 Laos. Individual stories slowly reveal what happens to each of them during and after an attempted airlift out of Laos. I think I just wanted to know more about the individual experiences of the orphans in a less detached way. Still - a fascinating story. 3.5⭐️

This book is set in war-torn Laos in the 60s and 70s, when daily bombings occurred for 9 years, destroying families and communities.
The book follows the fates of three friends: one who escapes, one who disappears, and one who is captured. The story was disorienting, due in part to my ignorance, in part to the time-shifting narrative structure. Still, Yoon's ability to create individual stories amidst a broader historical background was moving.

merelybookish Yoon notes in the beginning that Laos is the same size as the state of Utah and that more bombs fell on it than on Germany and Japan combined during WWIi 5y
