In each of these stories in this collection, I found a survivor. Someone who experienced tragedy, heartache, loss. Yet, they somehow found a way to keep moving forward.

More than anything I think that I just needed to know that while things are uncertain, there‘s still something to keep moving towards. Simple yet elegant, this book truly is a beacon of light in these murky times. Thank you, Paul Yoon, for this gift. ⛰

Nute “An expert mug collector.” I like that! Welcome to Litsy! It‘s a warm and friendly community. I know that you will enjoy yourself here. I‘m looking forward to getting to know you!🙂 5y

The mountain was out earlier this week when we went into the city to the hospital. Another thing I will miss about this beautiful city.

This was so beautiful. I didn‘t realize it was a collection of short stories, which are not usually my favorite thing. However in this case it didn‘t matter. Yoon‘s writing is so lovely that I would read anything he has written. Very highly recommended. #LitsyAtoZ2018

Smrloomis I also loved his debut novel. 6y

I'm wondering why we didn't hear more about The Mountain in 2017? Paul Yoon is a magnificent writer.

#MountTBRChallenge This is the list of unread books on my Kindle that I would like to eliminate from #MountTBR in 2018. I‘m not going to beat myself up if I don‘t read all of these, but participating in this challenge may help eliminate at least some of the backlog.

Hollie I‘m hoping to read The Alice Network early in 2018 as well. 7y
tricours Are there rules for the Mount TBR 2018 somewhere? 7y
Lynnsoprano @tricours I think @DivaDiane has organized this, but it seems pretty loose and low stress, which is my kind of challenge. 7y

DivaDiane @tricours @Lynnsoprano Yes, I “organized” it. It‘s very low pressure. I will post little actions to do, but there‘s no pressure to do any of them! The only rule is that a book has to be on your shelf longer than at least one month! I‘m going to count only Books bought prior to 2018. You choose how many books you want to read from your TBR. My goal is 40. I‘m sure I‘ll make that and probably more. Good luck! Use the hashtag #MountTBRchallenge. 7y
ValerieAndBooks I see The Essex Serpent! When do you think you‘ll want to read it? 7y
Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks How does February sound to you? We have guests coming from out of town in January, plus three of my voice students have performance assessment. I don‘t expect to get much reading done next month 😄 7y
ValerieAndBooks February sounds good, let me know when you‘re ready 😊! 7y

Got this in the mail today! Paul Yoon is one of my very favorite writers of all time. His novel, Snow Hunters is in my top 5 of all time favorite books.

Tamra This is on my TBR and I stacked the other too. 😁 7y
Irenadawn I have to catch up with this author. I am behind with him and way far behind with Knausguarde. 7y

I really enjoyed the writing in this short story collection. The writing is spare, often stark, and affecting. The stories deal mainly with how people carry on following a tragedy, whether from the aftermath of war, illness or a death in the family. The stories have a melancholy feel, but they are also beautiful in how they highlight the resilience of people. Highly recommend!

merelybookish Thanks for the review! I've been curious about this one. 7y

Starting this short story collection on this lazy Sunday morning. It was part of yesterday's library book haul. I have seen really good reviews of it, so 🤞🏻🤞🏻.

Words I used to describe Yoon's novella Snow Hunters hold true to this collection of short stories: quiet, gentle, exquisite. Yoon has a way of packing so much into his sparse prose! This is the kind of writing that makes you feel like you're holding your breath so you can listen more closely. There were spots that moved a little too slowly for my taste, but overall this collection satisfied my need for a book I could relax into and simply enjoy.
