Lalani‘s oppressive life leads her to discover her courage, bringing restoration for multiple races and lands. Vignettes display the viewpoint of misunderstood creatures, and Lalani brings healing through identification and empathy for the cursed and forgotten. The story is strongly based on Filipino folklore which I appreciated learning about, & would have been a 5 star reading if the folklore had been more explained and made meaningful.
Here's my #OrangeStack for day 1 of the #AutumnPlease! photo challenge. I didn't realize I had so many orange books to choose from.

This novel is somewhat a hard read. It is definitely for a young adult audience. It is great for readers who are interested in challenges and battles within a mythical world
This novel is full of adventure, mystery, challenges, and hope. The main character Lalani is determined to help those around her no matter what challenge she must face

This book was amazing, it was filled with amazing descriptions that made me feel like I was there watching it. This story contains thrilling adventures with Lalani. And follows her on her quest venturing into the unknown searching for something told to be a myth. Lemme know if anyone else enjoyed it!
Based on Filipino folklore, Newbery Medalist Erin Entrada Kelly‘s debut fantasy novel is a gorgeous, literary adventure about bravery, friendship, self-reliance, and the choice between accepting fate or forging your own path.
This book was so beautiful! It‘s about Lalani, an ordinary 12-year-old girl who can‘t do anything right—until she does. It wove in Filipino folklore beautifully. Highly recommend!
Starting this one next for #middlegrademarch. I adored Hello, Universe and Blackbird Fly by the same author.
"Sometimes you choose yourself" Lalani of the Distant Sea was a book about an ordinary, 12 year old girl who caused a flood to destory her island village and sets sail to make it right.
A fairytale like story. The imagery is beautiful and the children are brave and good. Loved it.
