Tonio
Tonio | Adri van der Heijden
2 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Winner of the 2012 Libris Literature Prize - the most prestigious literary prize in the Netherlands - and a bestseller in Holland and Germany, this is a mesmerising rendition of grief and love. On Pentecost 2010, Tonio - the only son of writer Adri van der Heijden - is hit by a car. He dies of his injuries that same day. Tonio is only 21. His parents are faced with the monstrous task of forging ahead with their lives in the knowledge that their only child will never come home, never again stop by just to catch up, never again go out shopping with his mother and bitch about passers-by, never again ask his father: 'Did you work well today?' Never again. Adri van der Heijden is driven by two compelling questions: what happened to Tonio during the final days and hours before the accident, and how could this accident happen? This search takes in various eyewitnesses, friends, police officers, doctors, and the mysterious Jenny - who turns out to have played a crucial role in Tonio's life during those final weeks. 'Raw, hard, but beautiful.' De Standaard 'A monument ot love and suffering: Toniois one of the most powerful, compelling expressions of the human spirit in the face of its opposite, death and the void.' Die Welt Translated by Jonathan Reeder

My favourite Dutch writer and my favourite book by him. #notinenglish This book is a stunning requiem for his son who tragicly died in an accident. I don't read in Dutch often, I don't like translated books and I don't like most Dutch authors, but this is an exemple of the beauty of the Dutch language.

I-read-and-eat @Lilitherat Have you seen the movie? I still need to watch it, I hope it does the book justice. 8y
Lilitherat @I-read-and-eat No I haven't yet and to be fully honest I'm a bit hesitant, just like you I wonder if it will or even can live up to the book! 8y

Pickpick

So excited about todays #booktober challenge: #memorablememoirs. This book is very dear to me. Van der Heijden writers about the loss of his son Tonio who died in an accident. I read this quite soon after I had lost one of my best friends and it was so painfull, hard, real and beautiful to read this. The style is raw and real, nevertheless, Van der Heijden is a writer and it is beautifully written. It healed me a little. I'd like to share that.💙

I-read-and-eat Ps. The linked book is the english translation, it has recently been translated. There is no book I could recommand more. 💙 8y
