Cleanness
Cleanness | Garth Greenwell
1 post | 1 to read
In the highly anticipated follow-up to his beloved debut, What Belongs to You, Garth Greenwell expands his exploration of foreignness, obligation, and desire Sofia, Bulgaria, a landlocked city in southern Europe, stirs with hope and impending upheaval. Soviet buildings crumble, wind scatters sand from the far south, and political protesters flood the streets with song. In this atmosphere of disquiet, an American teacher navigates a life transformed by the discovery and loss of love. As he prepares to leave the place hes come to call home, he grapples with the intimate encounters that have marked his years abroad, each bearing uncanny reminders of his past. A queer students confession recalls his own first love, a strangers seduction devolves into paternal sadism, and a romance with another foreigner opens, and heals, old wounds. Each echo reveals startling insights about what it means to seek connection: with those we love, with the places we inhabit, and with our own fugitive selves. Cleanness revisits and expands the world of Garth Greenwells beloved debut, What Belongs to You, declared an instant classic by The New York Times Book Review. In exacting, elegant prose, he transcribes the strange dialects of desire, cementing his stature as one of our most vital living writers.

Ugh, chapter 8 is overly graphic and taking away from my initial enjoyment. The coarseness seems overdone and intentionally shocking. The language is harsh and vulgar. I‘m not a prude but this feels like the author is looking to make readers talk....and I guess it‘s working because here I am talking about it.

Crazeedi I'm not into vulgarity that wouldn't be a book I'd enjoy 5y
Cinfhen Yea, I‘m pretty confident you wouldn‘t enjoy this book @Crazeedi 😜 5y
Sace I don't consider myself a prude either but I get what you're saying. I don't like unnecessary coarseness and vulgarity either. 5y

Cinfhen It‘s just too too much and it‘s not adding anything to the story @Sace 5y
Sace @Cinfhen exactly! What's the point of it doesn't add anything? 5y
Branwen I felt the same way about this book and really had a hard time getting through it 😕 5y
Cinfhen There was that beginning part with the BDSM which was tough but I managed @Branwen and then I was really “enjoying” this book until I got halfway through chapter 8... it‘s SO hardcore! I feel like I didn‘t sign up for that @sace 😬I skipped and now I‘m back to listening to chapter 9 which feels more manageable 😆 5y
KatieB I heard a similar review of this book. Made me decide it wouldn‘t be for me 5y
Cinfhen It‘s not a book I would easily recommend @KatieB but there were some ( mostly) beautiful storytelling in these pages. So it‘s a mixed bag. Chapter 8 felt EXCESSIVE but the rest of the book while still graphic at times wasn‘t as unsettling. If you‘re still curious maybe give it a go?!?! 5y
