“A group of five emotionally sensitive teenagers are committed to a strange school meant for gifted girls that has a sinister true nature behind it.” This is a new one for me.

This 1990 copy of the 1974 book is actually falling to pieces as I read it. I hope it stays intact for 40 more pages.😬
Then I get to watch the movie on HBO.
WOW! When I saw a preview for the recent movie adaptation last night and decided to read the book before watching it, I was not expecting THIS. How have I never heard of this book until now? Despite how it was written for teen readers, it was more chilling, thoughtful, beautiful, and inventive than a lot of the adult ghost novels I‘ve read. This was such a great ghost story, that I can now say I‘m officially ready for Fall.
One of my fave authors when I was a pre-teen. Just saw online that Down A Dark Hall will be a movie later this year starring Uma Thurman.

I read the tagged book a long time ago and the other is still on my TBR.
Day 30 #UncannyOctober #Spooky I've posted about all of these before but here are three books that while not flat-out scary, have provided me with some good spooky chills and fun. I picked the audiobook of Coraline because Gaiman reads it & the singing rats 🐭🐭🐭😱 are extra spooky. You could include many Lois Duncan books here, but this is one of my YA favorites from her. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is a good classic spooky tale. 😱👻💀
"I'll never be at home here!" Kit cried. "Can't you feel it, Mom? There's something about this place-something-"(10). #san_35
Never ever read or seen this book before but it look pretty interesting and and scary. I'm a person who like to read scary book and this book seen kind of scary. 😆 #san_35
#LyricalApril #UmaThurman I googled 'Uma Thurman movies from books' & found out she's in an upcoming movie of a childhood favorite; Lois Duncan's Down a Dark Hall. It shot partially in the Spanish Canary Islands in December. Interestingly, Stephenie Meyer (yes that one) optioned the book & her company is producing it. I also learned that Meyer produced Austenland--a fun Austen-inspired movie from a book that I love. Very bookish all around! 📚👍💜
Day14 #booktober #setinaschool Lois Duncan had several books set or mostly set in a school & these are two of my favorites. Bonus, they're perfect for #spookyoctober w/ their respective gothic/paranormal & witchcraft themes. And since I was teaching a workshop all morning & it's a crazy day, I'm ticking all the boxes-besides my Trixie Belden series & assorted Judy Blume's, Duncan is who I read in grade & middle school for my #funfridayphoto 😱📚
#funfridayphoto Lois Duncan was the first author I read where I specifically decided to read all of her books. Who knew that junior high is where I would begin "backlisting". The first one I read was, of course, Summer of Fear. But, Down a Dark Hall, was my favorite. I I know it's Gothic feel is the reason I continue to like Gothic novels to this day.
Gothic thriller for teenagers. Definitely a great nostalgia trip and still holds up pretty well after all this time.
Well, Lois did it again - kept me up past my bedtime so I could finish this paranormal darkly Gothic thriller. I should just pick another book to start because after that ghostly excitement I won't be falling asleep any time soon...
Gutted that the woman who would keep me up at night passed away. So many sick spent in bed reading her stories. RIP
Still some of my favorite gothics/paranormals/thrillers. RIP Lois Duncan--you gave me so many feverish summer reads as a teenager, and I'll always be grateful.
