Dead at First Sight | Peter James

Roy Grace, creation of the award-winning author Peter James, exposes the dark side of the internet in Dead at First Sight. You dont know me, but I thought I knew you . . . A man waits at a London airport for Ingrid Ostermann, the love of his life, to arrive. Across the Atlantic, a retired NYPD cop waits in a bar in Floridas Key West for his first date with the lady who is, without question, his soulmate. The two men are about to discover theyve been scammed out of almost every penny they have in the world and that neither women exist. Meanwhile, a wealthy divorce plunges, in suspicious circumstances, from an apartment block in Munich. In the same week, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is called to investigate the suicide of a woman in Brighton, that is clearly not what it seems. As his investigations continue, a handsome Brighton motivational speaker comes forward. Hes discovered his identity is being used to scam eleven different women, online. The first he knew of it was a phone call from one of them, out of the blue, saying, You dont know me, but I thought I knew you. That woman is now dead. Roy Grace realizes he is looking at the tip of an iceberg. A global empire built on clever, cruel internet scams and the murder of anyone who threatens to expose them.

Mehso-so

Lots of characters and we know who the villains are from the beginning. I bit long for the story. But overall an enjoyable read.

Really struggled to get going with this book, found it changing between characters so many times, at the beginning, really confusing. It did become a bit more exciting towards the end when the characters points of view start to merge. Overall an ok book to read.

Another great read in this series. This one was focused on ‘romance crime‘. You meet someone on the internet, you fall in love , they then ask you for lots of money! You give them it, then they run away, you lose your money and the love of your life. I found it hard not to be judgemental- really people fall for this 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ but the story was great and it did try to rationalise how easily people fall for it.

MicheleinPhilly I just saw a news article about this today. Apparently scammers in Nigeria are impersonating service members on FB and then scamming women out of huge sums of money. 😒 5y
TrishB @MicheleinPhilly ladies!! Watch your money. In this book they hadn‘t even met them and were transferring thousands to bank accounts ☹️ 5y

TrishB @Cathythoughts you‘ve reminded me we‘re all different ❤️ because I was just - no way!! I‘m not a romantic person and I found it hard to believe that people could fall for it, but, yes, we‘re all vulnerable in different ways. 5y
Cathythoughts I wouldn‘t fall for that either , but I have fallen for believing people to be strong , only to find out they are bullies.... I‘ve been deceived in other ways ... 5y
TrishB @Cathythoughts I spent my 20s with a bully! I definitely hear you. ❤️ 5y
Centique As much as I really am the friendly softie I am on Litsy, I‘m also the hard nosed, believe NOTHING without hard proof cynic that my goofy family get to check all their weird emails! 😁🤣 So many scams, so many people need punching! 👊👊 5y

Bailedbailed

Bailed 😟 I REALLY don't like giving up on a book but it just felt horribly self indulgent and somewhat clinical. Just can't force myself to pick it back up

JanuarieTimewalker13 I‘m all for bailing if it‘s just not working for you! 5y
RedLeaves @JanuarieTimewalker13 feels like failing!🤣 5y

Yet another winner in the Roy Grace Series, it may be the fifteenth book in the series but far from ready to say goodbye to Roy Grace and the other characters in this series. Wasn‘t totally enamoured with the theme at the beginning but quickly totally hooked & needing to read on. If you like detective books and a good group of characters I strongly recommend this series to you. Unfortunately will be another year before my next fix of this series.

Jumping into another Peter James thriller. A handsome motivational speaker discovers his identity is being used to scam women who are looking for love online. The first he knew of it was a phone call from one of them, out of the blue, saying "you don't know me, but I thought I knew you".

That woman is now dead.
