Iron Giant
Iron Giant | Ted Hughes
9 posts | 27 read | 6 to read
An iron giant saves the world in this contemporary classic. A mysterious creature stalks the land, eating barbed wire and devouring tractors and plows. The farmers are mystified and terrified. And then they glimpse him in the night: the Iron Giant, taller than a house, with glowing headlight eyes and an insatiable taste for metal. The hungry giant must be stopped at any cost. Only a young boy named Hogarth is brave enough to lead the Iron Giant to a safe home. And only Hogarth knows where to turn when a space-bat as big as Australia, hungry for every living thing on Earth, darkens the sky. First published in 1968, Ted Hughes's classic tale is a powerful tribute to peace on earth and in all the universe. Of it Madeleine L'Engle wrote, "How grateful we should be for Ted Hughes's brilliant The Iron Giant. It speaks to all ages, and we need its message even more now." Philip Pullman called it "so gripping that when you begin to read it aloud, everyone stops to listen, young children and old people alike." Whether you think of it as a science fiction fantasy or a modern fairy tale or a tall-tale parable for today, you will never forget it."

Procrastinating and came across this fact about The Iron Giant, a film I loved as a kid. Anyone else know this? I want to read The Iron Man now!
@TrishB

BethM Hmmm. Maybe I'll have to read the book to get the correlation. (edited) 7y
IamIamIam Well, Ted Hughes had quite a lot to answer for!!! I loved this movie, however, but I've never read the book! Thanks for the heads up!! 7y
TrishB I read the book quite a while ago! 7y
laurieluna @TrishB thought you might have 😆 never read any Ted Hughes. 7y

Hosting Christmas at my house for the first time. I‘ve been baking all morning! In between I finished The Iron Man. The Iron Giant is one of my favorite animated films. The book is so different! Really enjoyed it though, and a nice, fast read.

Andrea4 Hope it goes as smoothly as Christmas can!!!😂 merry christmas! 7y
Skyrimir Merry Christmas to you as well! 7y

6yo loved having this book read to him. There's a real poetic feel, a melody almost, in the words when read aloud. And just scary enough to keep him wide eyed the whole way through.

EloisaJames This is such a lyrical, gracefully sad book. My mother read it aloud to us over and over--the message is as wonderful as the words. 8y
Centique @EloisaJames I so agree. Just beautiful 😊 8y
RadicalReader @Centique looked at the title and thanks to many marvel books I thought it had to do with the fantastic and handsome Tony Stark 8y

One of my childhood favourites 😊 love the book, love the movie. Used to read it with my Brothers and we still watch it every Christmas! Anyone else have nice memories about a childhood fave? 🎃😉🌰🍂🍁

Laura317 I had never heard of it. I must check this out. I have fond memories of the Little House on the Prairie books. I grew up reading them and watching the tv show.💕💕💕 8y
Johanna414 Lol my siblings and I watch Predator every Christmas... Very festive, right? 8y
Centique I loved this book and have it on my list to read to my 6yo soon. I remember loving Stig of the Dump at about the same age. (basically about a boy who finds a caveman living in a rubbish dump, in a house made out of discarded junk) 8y

TheLondonBookworm @Laura317 No way! Oh you must read it :) it's really short but the sweetest story. Then watch the animated adaptation (warning it will probably make you cry) 8y
TheLondonBookworm @Johanna414 haha sounds about right to me! It's a classic, Christmas is for classics 😬😬 8y
TheLondonBookworm @Centique Ah yes! Great book I remember studying it in school. Another one to add to reading to your son pile! :) 8y
