Surviving the Angel of Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz
Surviving the Angel of Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz | Eva Kor
16 posts | 19 read | 17 to read
Eva Mozes Kor was 10 years old when she arrived in Auschwitz. While her parents and two older sisters were taken to the gas chambers, she and her twin, Miriam, were herded into the care of the man known as the Angel of Death, Dr. Josef Mengele. Mengele's twins were granted the privileges of keeping their own clothes and hair, but they were also subjected to sadistic medical experiments and forced to fight daily for their own survival, as most of the twins died as a result of the experiements or from the disease and hunger pervasive in the camp. In a narrative told with emotion and restraint, readers will learn of a child's endurance and survival in the face of truly extraordinary evil. The book also includes an epilogue on Eva's recovery from this experience and her remarkable decision to publicly forgive the Nazis. Through her museum and her lectures, she has dedicated her life to giving testimony on the Holocaust, providing a message of hope for people who have suffered, and working toward goals of forgiveness, peace, and the elimination of hatred and prejudice in the world.

After seeing an exhibit @ the Indiana Historical Society on Eva Kor I wanted to know more. This slim book is perfect. Time after time she almost died in Auschwitz, but she survived in order to save her twin sister. After the war she experienced communist rule in Romania, serving in the Israeli army & a move to the USA when she didn‘t speak English. Her unbelievable choice to forgive the Nazi doctors who experimented on her is shocking & inspiring.

EKonrad I watched a documentary once about her and ended up emailing her. She responded with the nicest message ever. Such a hero of mine! ❤️ 2y
AvidReader25 @EKonrad That‘s beautiful! I love that she responded! 2y

This is a very short read. The situation that twins were forced into during the Holocaust is heart breaking..

This is so powerful to me. I had seen her in an interview a couple of years ago talking about this and how people couldn't understand how she could forgive what was done to her.

This is the first first hand account I've read from an Auschwitz survivor, though I've watched an interview with Eva Kor before. There really are no words to describe how emotional I felt reading it.

What a horrible story. A short book page Turner and one I want to reread to realise how lucky I am! Lockdown is nothing compared to what these people went through.

“Anger and hate are seeds that germinate war. Forgiveness is a seed for peace.”
Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz. In memory of those who are no longer able to be heard I read the above book. Eva Mosez Kor passed away this July, in Poland, where she was guiding a group. How telling that she died in Auschwitz, the place she survived but her parents & 2 older sisters were killed.

BarbaraBB This must be such a heard read. Do you feel prepared for your upcoming trip? Is Niki reading all these books too? 5y

Suet624 I didn‘t realize she died there. (edited) 5y
Cinfhen It‘s really sad @Suet624 she was 85 and it was quite unexpected 😭😭😭 @4thhouseontheleft almost all survivors are now over 80 years old, most are in their 90‘s by 2030 they expect no more will be living 💔 5y
Cinfhen Niki is not reading as much as I am @BarbaraBB I think I‘m trying to numb myself for the experience 😔 5y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen That is so understandable. I hope it works - but somehow I doubt that 😢 5y
Megabooks I will pray for you during your trip. For strength and to have a good experience. I am so glad you are going. You are a strong woman, Cindy!! 💞💞 5y
Butterfinger What? She actually died there recently? That to me seems horrific. But then I think of her courage to revisit and teach others. So I'm not sure if it's horrible or ironic or sort of poetic. 5y
Librarybelle A hard but necessary read. 💔 5y
Cinfhen Thank you @Megabooks 😘♥️ yes @Butterfinger I agree poetic seems like the right choice of words. She returned to Auschwitz a free woman, with children and grandchildren having defeated Mengele but ultimately died in the same place where she lost her family. It happened ironically on July 4, Independence Day💔 5y
Cinfhen I‘m still thinking how does a 10 year old survive without any family left except for her twin sister @Librarybelle and yet she had the brawn & bravery to do just that!!! 5y

I‘m off to London this weekend for a Holocaust teacher training event, so I thought this might be an appropriate book to read on the train. Eva Mozes Kor is a survivor whose testimony I‘ve used in my lessons for years, so I‘m really interested to learn about her experiences in more depth.

A quick, heartbreaking read adapted for young adult reading. I breezed through the first half of this book and then realized I had been holding my breath... Fans of Elie Wiesel's work or history enthusiasts in general will enjoy this.

Being critical I would say the writings a little rough. However this isn't written by an author and it's her voice. Not a TON of information but still a story that's important to be aware of.

Biography told by Eva Mozes Kor, a survivor of Dr. Mengele in the Auschwitz death camps. This story is intended for young adults and I would recommend it for upper middle school and high school. Books like these should be a required read so history never repeats itself.
