Circe | Madeline Miller

Pickpick

I think I was the last person to read Circe, but oh my word, what a book! Anything with map endpapers is likely to be up my alley, but then you add a feminist heroine and her struggle with loneliness and I'm in love.

Librarybelle I‘m in the middle of Circe, so you‘re not quite the last person! 😂 I‘m loving it so far! @BarbaraBB 4y
MsMelissa I loved Song of Achilles but I ended up bailing on this one. I found it boring. It made me sad. I really wanted to love it. 4y
Saknicole I love that book art, I wish my copy had it! And @Book_Fiend_Melissa I‘m the exact opposite! I liked this book so much better than Son of Achilles. Maybe because I found Achilles so entitled and pampered. The perspective was one in love with him, but I just didn‘t share in the feeling. 4y
BarbaraBB I loved both her books a lot! 4y
MsMelissa @Saknicole I get that what works in a book for some people won‘t work for others, but I always find it funny that two people can have such opposite reactions to the same books. 4y

“Anger and hate are seeds that germinate war. Forgiveness is a seed for peace.”
Today marks the 75th anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz. In memory of those who are no longer able to be heard I read the above book. Eva Mosez Kor passed away this July, in Poland, where she was guiding a group. How telling that she died in Auschwitz, the place she survived but her parents & 2 older sisters were killed.

alisiakae Oh, wow. 😢 5y
BarbaraBB This must be such a heard read. Do you feel prepared for your upcoming trip? Is Niki reading all these books too? 5y

Suet624 I didn‘t realize she died there. (edited) 5y
Cinfhen It‘s really sad @Suet624 she was 85 and it was quite unexpected 😭😭😭 @4thhouseontheleft almost all survivors are now over 80 years old, most are in their 90‘s by 2030 they expect no more will be living 💔 5y
Cinfhen Niki is not reading as much as I am @BarbaraBB I think I‘m trying to numb myself for the experience 😔 5y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen That is so understandable. I hope it works - but somehow I doubt that 😢 5y
Megabooks I will pray for you during your trip. For strength and to have a good experience. I am so glad you are going. You are a strong woman, Cindy!! 💞💞 5y
Butterfinger What? She actually died there recently? That to me seems horrific. But then I think of her courage to revisit and teach others. So I'm not sure if it's horrible or ironic or sort of poetic. 5y
Librarybelle A hard but necessary read. 💔 5y
Cinfhen Thank you @Megabooks 😘♥️ yes @Butterfinger I agree poetic seems like the right choice of words. She returned to Auschwitz a free woman, with children and grandchildren having defeated Mengele but ultimately died in the same place where she lost her family. It happened ironically on July 4, Independence Day💔 5y
Cinfhen I‘m still thinking how does a 10 year old survive without any family left except for her twin sister @Librarybelle and yet she had the brawn & bravery to do just that!!! 5y

A haunting story about a woman condemned of murder and awaiting her execution. The dynamics of a small group of people on an isolated farm in northern Iceland are fascinating and I loved how the story unfolded. The POV sections from Agnes are the most compelling, and I liked the sprinkling of historical documents that preceded most chapters. Another great book from my #newyearwhodis list. @MeganAnn you have excellent taste!

Librarybelle One of my favorite books! 5y
alisiakae @Librarybelle Definitely a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ for me! 5y

alisiakae @Librarybelle It also reminded me of Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood, which I read years ago, and also really liked. 5y
Librarybelle Alias Grace is on my to read list! 5y
MeganAnn So glad you liked it! I also enjoyed the dynamics between the characters and found Agnes‘ perspective to be the most compelling. I bet having been to Iceland you could better picture the landscape while reading. ❤️ (edited) 5y
Tamra Glad you liked it! 5y
alisiakae @MeganAnn Yes, that was helpful! Although the landscapes in Iceland are so varied, I‘m not sure if what I was picturing would be accurate for the northern part. We were in Reykjavik and the southeast coast. 5y
