Future Sex
Future Sex: A New Kind of Free Love | Emily Witt
10 posts | 13 read | 56 to read
A funny, fresh, and moving antidote to conventional attitudes about sex and the single woman Emily Witt is single and in her thirties. She has slept with most of her male friends. Most of her male friends have slept with most of her female friends. Sexual promiscuity is the norm. But up until a few years ago, she still envisioned her sexual experience "eventually reaching a terminus, like a monorail gliding to a stop at Epcot Center." Like many people, she imagined herself disembarking, finding herself face-to-face with another human being, "and there we would remain in our permanent station in life: the future." But, as we all know, things are more complicated than that. Love is rare and frequently unreciprocated. Sexual acquisitiveness is risky and can be hurtful. And generalizing about what women want or don't want or should want or should do seems to lead nowhere. Don't our temperaments, our hang-ups, and our histories define our lives as much as our gender? In Future Sex, Witt captures the experiences of going to bars alone, dating online, and hooking up with strangers. From her home in San Francisco, she decides to say yes to everything and to find her own path. She observes the subcultures she encounters with a wry sense of humor, capturing them in all of their strangeness, ridiculousness, and beauty. The result is an open-minded, honest account of the contemporary pursuit of connection and pleasure, and an inspiring new model of female sexuality--open, forgiving, and unafraid.

Initially turned off by the overly-intellectual style of Witt‘s personal recollections of single life, I found some interest once she tied in a journalistic stories of porn sets, Burning Man & sex parties.

And yet by the end, most sex came off as sterile. The sheer dedication of Witt‘s was impressive, as she studies “future sex” behaviors of couples/non-couples experimenting with non-monogamy, breaking the definition of healthy relationships.

I thought this was a book of essays about contemporary female sexuality in America, which it is, but I didn't know to expect the surpassingly beautiful writing. I've only been caught off-guard in this way by a few other books in my life; I plan to purchase my own copy after I return this one to the library. Also I need to read everything else Emily Witt has written. Thank you @rebeccaschinsky for rec'ing this on the @bookriot #AllTheBooks podcast!

Anybody who lives in & loves San Francisco knows that this city stands for progressiveness. Liberal attitudes & sexual inclusiveness & free expression are a huge part of our collective values.

I ❤️ed this book mostly because I connect with the way SF was described. Witt's compilation of personal and curious essays on topics like polyamory, online dating, orgasmic meditation, and pornography are all explored. Only read if you are comfortable 😍.

[DELETED] 3323341091 i enjoyed this book as well. 8y
samalot I was thinking of reading this for the "nonfic book about technology" task for Read Harder. Do you think it would fit? 8y
BooksForEmpathy @samalot Yes definitely. It really is so much about how technology is shifting the way we view sex and relationships and sexual identity. Not every essay is about technology directly, but enough are and the others are all marked by it in some way. 8y
mcipher It's a great cover! 8y

This book is so fascinating. I love her writing. It's exacting. I never know where these essays are leading me, I'm surprised every time, but never let down.
