A Mighty Long Way
A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School | Carlotta Walls Lanier, Lisa Frazier Page
9 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
BONUS: This edition contains an A Mighty Long Way discussion guide. When fourteen-year-old Carlotta Walls walked up the stairs of Little Rock Central High School on September 25, 1957, she and eight other black students only wanted to make it to class. But the journey of the Little Rock Nine, as they came to be known, would lead the nation on an even longer and much more turbulent path, one that would challenge prevailing attitudes, break down barriers, and forever change the landscape of America. For Carlotta and the eight other children, simply getting through the door of this admired academic institution involved angry mobs, racist elected officials, and intervention by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who was forced to send in the 101st Airborne to escort the Nine into the building. But entry was simply the first of many trials. Breaking her silence at last and sharing her story for the first time, Carlotta Walls has written an engrossing memoir that is a testament not only to the power of a single person to make a difference but also to the sacrifices made by families and communities that found themselves a part of history.

I noticed that this excellent ebook is currently on sale for $2 on Amazon. I highly recommend it, especially if you're interested in history, diverse perspectives, and the fight for equality.

Carlotta Walls LaNier recently spoke at the library I work for about her experiences as one of nine Black students who integrated into Central High School in the 50s. Her book does an amazing job conveying in great detail the difficult fight she and her companions faced. It's a painful, heartbreaking, and powerful read that puts into perspective events that weren't all that long ago. #BlackHistory #ColoradoLocal

Carlotta is in elementary school when she is called the n-word on a bus in segregated Little Rock, Arkansas. This is her mother‘s advice.

I think it‘s good advice for us all.

Traci1 It's so hard to do, though. 4y

obviateit I‘m really struggling with this today. ❤️ 4y
BookishMarginalia @KVanRead Me too. One good thing about being a teacher: you have to keep going and keep functioning and model persistence and patience. But omg 4y
BookishMarginalia @Traci1 @CaffeineAndCandy @obviateit I‘m grieving — I honestly cannot fathom how half the country can think this behavior is okay. I can‘t wrap my head around it. 4y
Traci1 @BookishMarginalia it was disappointing but maybe more forgivable in 2016 when one could claim ignorance. But we've got 4 years of evidence now. Anyone who doesn't see it is willingly choosing not to. They're putting their wants ahead of others' needs. It's disgusting. Sorry. Maybe I won't be able to find patience after all. I'm sad and angry and over all the excuses. 4y
obviateit @BookishMarginalia same. I‘ve been repeatedly triggered by so many people accepting/excusing his textbook narcissism these past few years. 😔 4y
BookishMarginalia @traci1 I hear you. And I agree. It also scares me, this utter disregard for science, basic decency, and even facts. To embrace conspiracy theories and just plain falsehoods is unconscionable. 4y

#bookmarks are usually scrap papers or post it tabs. But to my surprise, two books I'm currently reading have the same Book Soup Bookstore bookmarks in them. For a few months my husband was working right next door so I got a lot of new books and a lots of bookstore swag. #booktober #day4

I'm super sick reading buddies. Consuming so much soup. And I still haven't finished this book. I know it picks up, I just can't seem to get that far. Toddler's nap is happening soon, maybe I can get a few pages done.

LauraBeth Hope you feel better 😀 8y
BlackandBookish Thanks. It's more likely I'll be sleeping than reading... 8y

BookishFeminist Feel better! ❤️ Being sick in the summer is the worst. Audiobooks help when I'm sick and can't concentrate as well if that's your thing. 8y

It's taken me months to get through the first few chapters. My bestie started reading it at the same time and has gotten a little farther, letting me know it's worth reading. I'm trudging along.
