This is a great collection of spooky tales rooted in African-American history and folktales. I love how each story has a short paragraph before providing historical context. This was darker than I expected it to be. Some stories were creepy due to the supernatural elements, like The Gingi. Each strange tale managed to capture the in-between state of being neither here nor there: a blending of the surreal and the sordidly real; the #supernatural and that which is of this world with its all-too-human foibles and monstrosities. I finished — woo hoo! Some numbers in the teens and twenties were tough, but this was fun. Thanks for hosting @Tiffy_Reads and @JoeStalksBeck !

What an excellent story collection! Such rich storytelling mixing history with legend, folk tale, and the supernatural. Some stories were more spine-tingling than others, but definitely the perfect read at this time of year. And if you (like me before this book), don‘t know what the “dark-thirty” is, you‘ll just have to read this for yourself to find out!
