The Magic of Ordinary Days
The Magic of Ordinary Days | Ann Howard Creel
15 posts | 15 read | 9 to read
Olivia Dunne, a studious minister's daughter who dreams of being an archaeologist, never thought that the drama of World War II would affect her quiet life in Denver. An exhilarating flirtation reshapes her life, though, and she finds herself banished to a rural Colorado outpost, married to a man she hardly knows. Overwhelmed by loneliness, Olivia tentatively tries to establish a new life, finding much-needed friendship and solace in two Japanese American sisters who are living at a nearby internment camp. When Olivia unwittingly becomes an accomplice to a crime and is faced with betrayal, she finally confronts her own desires. Beautifully written and filled with memorable characters, Creel's novel is a powerful exploration of the nature of trust and love.

“The Magic of Ordinary Days” movie was my comfort watch for years, but I‘ve never noticed it was a book.
I decided to read it now because we just drove through southern Colorado. Also Camp Amache recently became National Historic Site. I really enjoyed the book. Historical context was fascinating. I loved the romantic story line as well, but I felt it wrapped up a little too quick . The book is darker than the movie, but there‘s beauty in that.

Mehso-so

Just a tad too twee in parts and given what‘s potentially happening to women‘s reproductive rights in the US it wasn‘t a good time for me to read it. That isn‘t a fault of the writer or writing.

The name of the narrator!

This was my final #LMPBC book, and I enjoyed it. Livvy is a young woman who finds herself in a delicate condition after being abandoned by a soldier during WW2. Her father sends her to rural CO to marry a farmer sight unseen. Ray is a quiet, gentle man still grieving the loss of his brother in the war and is hoping for companionship and eventual love with Livvy. There are actually two stories here. Livvy has to adjust to her totally different 🔻

robinb life (she is college-educated and dreams of travels and discoveries) on a rural farm with very little social interactions or work to keep her busy. She befriends two Japanese American sisters from a nearby internment camp, and their friendship storyline has its ups and downs with a tragic twist.
Livvy I found frustrating as she seemed judgmental and selfish at times, but I tried to keep in mind the shock of her upended life. 🔻

robinb The love story is a very slow one, but I found that refreshing as well as believable. The friendship story is sweet but heartbreaking. Lots of historical mentions here (very interesting) and some lovely, evocative prose. 4/5⭐️ 3y

This was my #LMPBC book for January so I don't want to say too much. Basically, I really liked the story, but really didn't like the main character haha She was incredibly self-absorbed, and I thought she stayed that way all the way through.

Final book for #JumpStart2022 as I did finish this Monday!! @Lizpixie @Clwojick
#Pantone2022 - Fragile Sprout - it seemed like it matched better in real life haha @Clwojick
#BookSpinBingo

TheAromaofBooks #RoadTripUSA - Colorado @megnews
#WickedWords - New @AsYouWish (this was a January read/word lol)
#19822022 - 2001 @Librarybelle
#OWLs #HistoryofMagic - Hogwarts, A History
#TheShelfieChronicles - 22 letters in the title (!)
#BuildYourLibrary - Set during a war

AsYouWish Yay!!! Have you ever watched the movie?? I think it was on Hallmark and they still play it every once in a while. I liked the movie (but that could be more so because Skeet Ulrich is in it and I have a small…okay major crush on that man 😁)💙💙💙💙 3y
Lizpixie Well done you!👏👏👏 3y
Librarybelle Another great choice for so many prompts!! 3y

@TheAromaofBooks this will be on your way shortly. It‘s all packaged and ready to go, but it‘s snowing here in VA - which pretty much means the end of the world. @DanaManiac @robinb #LMBPC

I am currently working on these three books, all of which were on my December #BookSpinBingo card so I‘m motivated. “Luckily” I‘ve been feeling under the weather so that makes it perfect for getting some reading in. Confident I can finish The Magic of Ordinary Days and The Christmas Wedding.

HollyBolly I loved the movie of The Magic of Ordinary Days!! I didn't know it was a book. 3y

4.5 ⭐️

~ I really enjoy love stories where the characters take time to fall in love.
~ Livvy's character is frustrating but absolutely believable, considering what she went through.
~ Ray's life is very simple and he seems simple, but is complex and so kind.
~ I fell in love with the movie years ago and decided to check out the book. So glad I did!

Le sigh… I thought that I entered a reading slump, but all along I just needed to change books. I started my #LMPBC book halfway through the month, and could never get past chapter 1. It might be the wrong book or it might be the wrong time. But, I finally accepted over the weekend that I needed to change gears. Last time I pushed through a bad book, no one else read it! 🤦🏾‍♀️ I devoured the new pick and now it will be on its way tomorrow! ☺️

robinb Yay!!! This one sounds good! I actually saw some of the Hallmark movie that‘s based on it years ago and enjoyed what I remember (which isn‘t much 😂). 3y
kimmypete1 Yay!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks Sounds good!! I have also sent around some books that I struggled with and then everyone else struggled with them, too. Just not worth it!! I'm excited to read this one!! 3y

DanaManiac @TheAromaofBooks Lol then you definitely understand! I was constantly making excuses for why I couldn‘t pick it up to read 😂 3y

I have about seven more but they wouldn‘t really fit in the picture. I have a hobbit plant, another string of pearl, one like string of pearls but bigger, two I don‘t know the names of, and several aloe plants #bookandplants #succulents @jfalkens

hermyknee That‘s awesome! 6y
jfalkens Pretty! I love succulents, every time we see a new one in the store I want to take it home lol 6y
Ke633 I always end up buying more at then end of summer because they are on sale and a little puny looking. 6y

jfalkens @Ke633 that would be me. My newest one(a short spikey ball) we got at Meijer and had to transplant asap as it was root bound, we are hoping it'll loosen up and spread out in its new container and doesn't die 🤞🤞 I also have Prickly Pear Cacti outside. 6y
tracey38 So pretty. I love succulents. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Nice! I love them! 6y
Carolyn11215 Those look absolutely gorgeous! I live in Santa Fe and am going to get a prickly pear cactus this summer hoping it can survive over the winter here. If too cold, I can always grab some of pads and repropogate. 6y

A friend lent me this beautiful book set in the American West during World War 2. Olivia has an arranged marriage, and she befriends two sisters who are nearby Japanese interns. Life is both simple and complex.
