The Sisters Are Alright
The Sisters Are Alright: Changing the Broken Narrative of Black Women in America | Tamara Winfrey Harris
What's wrong with black women? Not a damned thing! The Sisters Are Alright exposes antiblack-woman propaganda and shows how real black women are pushing back against distorted cartoon versions of themselves. When African women arrived on American shores, the three-headed hydraservile Mammy, angry Sapphire, and lascivious Jezebelfollowed close behind. In the '60s, the Matriarch, the willfully unmarried baby machine leeching off the state, joined them. These stereotypes persist to this day through newspaper headlines, Sunday sermons, social media memes, cable punditry, government policies, and hit song lyrics. Emancipation may have happened more than 150 years ago, but America still won't let a sister be free from this coven of caricatures. Tamara Winfrey Harris delves into marriage, motherhood, health, sexuality, beauty, and more, taking sharp aim at pervasive stereotypes about black women. She counters warped prejudices with the straight-up truth about being a black woman in America. We have facets like diamonds, she writes. The trouble is the people who refuse to see us sparkling.

I read this for a book club. I like that this is a quick read and not a super heavy academic text or inaccessible overview of core ideas around Black #feminism. The book touches on how Black women‘s sexuality is policed, respectability politics, fatphobia, and overall misogynoir. If you‘re already well informed on how Black women are treated in society this is a refresher. For folks new to some of these ideas this is a good place to start.

As I was reading this, I kept going back to reread passages. This is one of those books I think everyone should read, because otherwise the problems it mentions won‘t get addressed. I think African American women of any age will find themselves somewhere in these pages. Can‘t say enough good things about it.

This was a #Hoopla read, but I ordered my own copy. Definitely one I‘ll keep returning to over time.

A good balance of self-help/inspiration and academic study. Affirmations and advice for black women.

#photobookchallenge day 21 - pink cover

This is firmly on my TBR! Have you read it?

#blackhistorymonth #diversebooks #nonfiction #feminism

LindsayReads Yes! It was good! It seemed like it could go into more depth, but it was solid regardless. 8y

Just finished this book today and I must say... it's amazing. I no longer feel alone in my day to day journey as a BW. Feminists, if you dare to call yourself that, should read this one and see what being a black women in the great states is all about...

Great intersectional feminist read. As a white woman, I am not the author's primary audience, but it is regardless a noteworthy read to understand how and why the odds are stacked against black women in the U.S. My only criticism is that it could have gone even deeper--this is definitely a one-sit read--but it packs a punch nonetheless.

This is really great so far, but I'm starting to suspect the audio track was never actually edited. There are long gaps between sections and many phrases are being repeated. At first I thought it was just a glitch because the reader's voice doesn't trip up tonally, but when, at one point, she said "human papillomavirus" at least three times and then giggled, I started ?

Has anyone else experienced this before?

8little_paws I've listened to audiobooks with maybe one glitch in them such as a repeated phrase, but I've never caught more than one in a book. 8y
LindsayReads @8little_paws Until now, that was my experience, too. This is odd...and a little depressing considering the content of this book. 8y
Moray_Reads I have an audiobook version of Martin Chuzzlewitt in which you can hear the reader turn pages as he reads. It drive me crazy at first but after a while it was sort of soothing 8y

Foxyfictionista I tried Audible for a few months last year but something odd happened when I was listening to Kindred. It skipped ahead several chapters I thought that maybe I dozed off so I rewound it but it did the same thing. I checked to make sure that it was the unabridged version which it was. So I canceled my subscription and bought the book which made so much more sense. No more Audible for me. 8y
ReadingEnvy @Foxyfictionista I've found that audible takes back books for any reason and gives back credits - even if you don't like it but especially for audio issues 8y
LindsayReads @Moray_Reads Yeah, while I'm glad not all audiobooks are like this, I don't really mind it. 8y
LindsayReads @Foxyfictionista @ReadingEnvy Yes, I've heard from friends that Audible is *very* flexible about its return policy. This is on Hoopla. Thank goodness it's not glitchy! That would drive me nuts. This just seems like a cold read no one bothered to edit. 8y
Foxyfictionista @ReadingEnvy @LindsayReads I didn't realise that. Thanks for letting me know! 8y
ReadingEnvy @LindsayReads ah hoopla... I've only this month tried an audiobook from them. I'll look out for this kind of thing! It seems shameful not to edit! 8y

this book has been to my list to read for a while - I've read numerous articles on by her on the bitch media website (her column Some of Us are Brave is a particular favorite of mine) - and while it took me a while I'm glad that I finally got around to reading it

Wonderful read.
Winfrey covers the struggles we go through, the stereotypes we're faced with and the taboo that is "the black woman." Along with her narrative, she includes testimonies and stories of women who have broken glass ceilings in their fields and encourages other women to do the same.
I loved the transparency that she displayed with each topic that she discussed. This book forced me to think, and that's what I loved about it.
