The Dance of the Dissident Daughter
The Dance of the Dissident Daughter | Sue Monk Kidd
17 posts | 21 read | 14 to read
The acclaimed spiritual memoir from the author of The Secret Life of Bees I was amazed to find that I had no idea how to unfold my spiritual life in a feminine way. I was surprised and, in fact, a little terrified when I found myself in the middle of a feminist spiritual reawakening. Sue Monk was a "conventionally religious, churchgoing woman, a traditional wife and mother" with a thriving career as a Christian writer until she began to question her role as a woman in her culture, her family, and her church. From a jarring encounter with sexism in a suburban drugstore to monastery retreats and rituals in the caves of Crete, Kidd takes readers through the fear, anger, healing, and transformation of her awakening. Retaining a meaningful connection "with the deep song of Christianity," she opens the door for traditional Christian women to discover a spirituality that speaks directly to them and provides inspiring wisdom for all who struggle to embrace their full humanity.

"This woman will become pregnant with herself, with the symbolic female-child who will, if given the chance, grow up to reinvent the woman's life."

This has many interesting points, but at times it gets a little woo woo, and I also think it‘s a bit too long. At the same time, I wish she‘d talked more about the shift in her writing career. Also, her journey features travel to Greece, multiple women‘s retreats, and an extended stay in San Francisco where she hardly left her lodgings. What?!?

Nevertheless, there are some useful ideas, and she writes well.

Susanita Meanwhile my husband has been ranting at me about the “stolen” election. 😬 On the way home from returning this book to the library, I stopped at Starbucks for my “daily” coffee to celebrate. 4y

One of my book clubs put out the list for the next year (August to May), so I‘ve been adjusting my Goodreads tags and putting library holds on the popular titles.

Anger can fuel our ability to challenge, to defy injustice. It can lead to creative projects, constructive behavior, acts that work toward inclusion. In such ways anger becomes a dynamism of love.

When reading this passage, I had to stop and think about the way I was raised and how I was taught this by the church and how it affected me. #thoughtprovoking #aprilbookshowers

Bookwitchery This is DEFINITELY going on my TBR list! It's funny when you come across something that is so on point it takes your breath away. I was scared top death my Freshman year in college when I took a religion class that focused on feminist theology. It's like I was waiting to get struck by lightning. (In my defense I attended a church while growing up where church officials tried to cast devils out of me during a revival. It didn't work.) 8y
andrew61 I've only read The secret life of bees, which i recall enjoying so i will add this to the stack. Thanks. 8y
booksandsympathy @Bookwitchery I am sorry. Obviously, you know you don't have devils in you to be cast out in the first place. Sometimes the brain washing that goes on in the church hurts people and it makes me angry. I was told by my youth pastor that I should marry a pastor or youth pastor because I need to be kept in line. I was a very active member of the church & school & its dance ministry and all I did was read or dance. Not exactly rebellious. 8y

I started this book a few months ago and I am taking my sweet time reading it. This book is paradigm shifting and i don't want to miss any of the beautiful truths. I read and then sit in my thoughts. I come back to it when I have time, knowing I will need to sit, again, in my thoughts.
