Picked this to read because it was short and well-known, without knowing anything about it but pop culture hearsay, and it was ... not what I expected. Tolerably whimsical until we arrive in Africa and become fixated on white men vs. black men, at which point … definitely influenced by its time period. The writing itself wasn't terrible, at least.

I loved this when I was a kid, and thought I‘d give it a re-read to see if it‘s something for my daughter. And oh, I did not expect the amount of childhood-feels the names of all the animals gave me.

3✨ The characters go from one adventure to another. Dolittle is not a rich man so it takes them time to get from one place to another, and everyone is trying to keep them captive. However, he is rewarded for his efforts and the animals we encounter are forever change.

Read this both for #bookspin and #192025 as this book was published in #1920 .
The publishing date is the reason why there are some racist bits. Overall, if you just focused on the adventure and the animal shenanigans it was a good read.
Generally a pick.

I have seen / read many versions of this story, but never read the original one 😛 The original story is better than all the other versions. I enjoyed reading this book with my little one, who loves animals. At Beatrix‘s request, I read our edition of the first in the series of the Doctor Dolittle series. Parts of this have not aged well - as you would expect there are some racist overtones when the doctor visits Africa - but I do appreciate the doctor‘s perspective on the importance and free will of animals.

A simple, engaging story that continues to capture the imagination of young children. Dr Dolittle discovers that he prefers animals to people and thus becomes an animal doctor. By paying attention, he learns to ‘talk‘ to animals and sails off to Africa to treat a disease that is killing the monkey population.
Beatrix loved this so much we are now reading our hard copy version. Not sure my narration will be quite as good.

I ended up not enjoying this very much. I mean, the idea is strong, but it wasn't well crafted, even though it's supposed to be a fun kids' book. Also, the was some racial stuff in the parts set in Africa didn't age very well 🤦 I read this for #thereadingrush for the prompt to read a book that a movie you've already seen is based on

Dr Dolittle can talk to pretty much any #animal.

The 202 film version starring Robert Downey Jr isn‘t getting particularly good reviews...

So I started listening to the Voyages of Doctor Dolittle without realizing that that was book 2 so I quickly found book 1 and listened to it. It was very silly and fun to listen to. I‘m wanting to go see the movie so had to read the books first. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A children's classic, written in 1920, about an old white man who travels to Africa. I'm SURE there won't be anything racist or cringeworthy at all! And as I was reading, I was completely charmed and absolutely delighted to discover that to be true! How progressive was this Hugh Lofting person!As it turns out, offensive content was removed by the publisher. So let the record state that my four-star review is for the lovely, non-racist version.

I adored the Dr. Dolittle books when I was 10. That would be the best thing EVER to be able to talk to animals! The giant snail was one of my favourites.
