For Commandant Verhoeven life is beautiful: he is happily married, expecting his first child with the lovely Irène. But his blissful existence is punctured by a murder of unprecedented savagery. Worse still, the press seem to have it in for him - his every move is headline news. When he discovers that the killer has killed before - that each murder is a homage to a classic crime novel - the fourth estate are quick to coin a nickname... The Novelist... With both men in the public eye, the case develops into a personal duel, each hell-bent on outsmarting the other. There can only be one winner - whoever has the least to lose...

Excellent crime fiction! 🖤 I devoured this book! The MC Commandant Camille Verhoeven investigates a gruesome murder. He soon learns this was not the murderer‘s first crime. While searching for this killer, Camille and his wife are expecting their first child. A fast paced novel that had me gasping in surprise time after time. #MountTBR The vibrant sunflower watercolor was painted by @mypoesoul https://poesoulstudio.com

Dogearedcopy I literally gasped out loud at one point when I realized what was happening! This has to be one of the most perfect mysteries ever written! 4y
NatalieR @Dogearedcopy And that ending!! 😱 This author is incredibly talented! I want to read ALL of his work now! 😂 4y

I don't even have words right now other than the one that came out of my mouth when I finished this book (I won't repeat it here in mixed company). This is more gruesome than Alex (the second in this series, first one translated into English), but just as engrossing.

Not your typical main character but it's what made this book interesting. Ending was not as good as the book made me think it would be.

WHAT I'M THINKING: WHERE THE F%^* IS MY COPY OF 'IRENE'?! THAT COST ME $$$ WHEN I HAD TO ORDER IT FROM THE UK (WHEN THE DOLLAR WAS WEAK VS THE POUND); AND BECAUSE THEN THERE WAS NO US RELEASE DATE FOR POSSIBLY THE BEST MYSTERY THRILLER I'VE EVER READ!!! WE MAY HAVE A "DISCUSSION" ABOUT THIS WHEN YOU GET HOME IF YOU HAVE GIVEN IT AWAY.... (ABOVE: What I wrote instead) #adulting #FunFridayPhoto

Somehow I read the this trilogy backwards, newest first (Camille, Alex)and now three quarters through the first volume, which is Irene. I'll finish it tonight. Approaching this first volume with hindsight of what lies ahead is like being in a slo-mo car crash and knowing there is nothing to do except ride it out.

About a serial killer who re-creates murders from crime novels; and the Commandant who is tasked with tracking him down... Grisly. Devastating. Serious mind-fuckery. Absolutely brilliant.

LitHousewife This makes me wish I could handle books like that better. Maybe I'll give it a try and see how it goes. 8y
Dogearedcopy @LitHousewife After the 1st 100 pp, I actually paused 2 consider if this was glorified violence porn; and whether 2 continue. I decided that it might very well be; but knew that I was 2 committed at that point 2 walk away. The imagery that Lemaitre paints is shocking and not for the faint of heart 8y
LitHousewife @Dogearedcopy In that case, I'll avoid it. Maybe you can tell me the story the next time we meet. 😊 8y

Half-Way Status Update: This is hard core Noir x 4: Fans of the genre in its darkest iterations will find this clever and fast moving; but it's still psychically challenging. Again, NOT for the squeamish; Makes The Millennium Trilogy look like a Disneyfied fairy tale (Image from Fake Movie Posters)

Lemaitre certainly doesn't pull any punches, evoking Goya's *Saturn Devouring His Son* on page 26... Fair warning that this isn't a cozy series!

Three years ago, I just couldn't wait for this to come to the US, so it was one of the titles in one of my biennial UK book orders (Yeah, just getting to it now...) Supposed to be better than the Millennium Trilogy

Tonton Writing-wise, LeMaitre is way better! Millennium series has heroine and storyline that wins over writing style. 8y

Irene is the first of a trilogy. I've read the first two, Irene and Alex, and have Camille on hand. These psycho-murder mysteries are incredibly explicit so please be aware before purchasing. That said, the cast of recurring characters are interesting and believe it or not, somewhat entertaining.
