This book was simply amazing. It is an extremely alternative history of the Harlem Renascence. In this world, people with a corrupted soul become these monsters that must be killed or must be cured. And being it‘s the 1920‘s and his is Harlem and most of the monsters were people who believed in lynching and segregation. But there is one family that is the best at making their bitter root brew that can save someone from this life.

A family of monster hunters that must battle both monsters and societal issues in 1920s Harlem. Great for fans of Hellboy; there's a cover variant drawn by Mike Mignola #graphicnovels

Bitter Root is an action-packed comic about a Black family in 1924 Harlem fighting monsters. The conceit is that moral corruption transforms people into literal monsters. The story explores racism through horror tropes. My one complaint is that it's almost too fast-paced; I'd like to get to know the characters just a bit better.

For reals, y'all, I freakin' love this book! The story is so intense and complex, they have a series of must-read scholarly essays dissecting the story at the back of the trade (originally published with each issue). Immediately loveable characters, gorgeous art, and powerful social commentary so well integrated that you don't even realize all the thoughts going through your head until you put the book down, which is hard.

Loved it. Cannot wait til I can get volume 2.

Another excellent graphic novel finished today. I've been wanting to read this series for a while and October felt like the perfect month to start it.

I love the mix of new and old, almost steampunk like. The story is unique and the characters are already very well developed for this to be the first volume. I can't wait to see what other monsters this family fights.

Will I read a comic I‘m unfamiliar with just because Skottie Young does a variant cover for one of the issues? Yes, yes I will & with this one, I‘m really glad I did. Nominated for an Eisner for Best New Series, Bitter Root is simply fantastic. 1920s Harlem is awash in monsters, new & old, & the Sangeryes family, one of the greatest monster fighting families in history, has a lot of work to do. Great story & art. Recommended.

#NCBD was a whole new world today—I started using my favorite store‘s subscription service. No more worrying about whether or not I‘ll get the comics I want. The store knows what I want & they automatically pull the issues each week. Yay! Single issues this week include Little Bird #3, Fairlady #2, Orphan Age #2, & Ironheart #6. I also picked up Bitter Root, Vol. 1. Now back to We Contain Multitudes which I‘m really enjoying—comics tomorrow!
