Signs for Lost Children
Signs for Lost Children | Sarah Moss
18 posts | 10 read | 40 to read
Only weeks into their marriage a young couple embark on a six-month period of separation. Tom Cavendish goes to Japan to build lighthouses and his wife Ally, Doctor Moberley-Cavendish, stays and works at the Truro asylum. As Ally plunges into the institutional politics of mental health, Tom navigates the social and professional nuances of late 19th century Japan. With her unique blend of emotional insight and intellectual profundity, Sarah Moss builds a novel in two parts from Falmouth to Tokyo, two maps of absence; from Manchester to Kyoto, two distinct but conjoined portraits of loneliness and determination. An exquisite continuation of the story of Bodies of Light, Signs for Lost Children will amaze Sarah Moss's many fans.

It took me awhile to become entranced by this one which was not helped by the fact that at first part of this book is almost verbatim the end of Bodies of Light. While this wasn‘t my favorite of Moss‘s books I did end up very much entranced and wanted more and more of Ally‘s life ( I could have done with less of Tom‘s journey). I am ready to buy all of books she has written. 2024 may end up the year of Sarah Moss for me.

Beautiful writing, as always, and rather interesting tale of Japan and Japanese culture in 1880's. I liked the interaction and cultural diversity, alongside the female asylum story

I absolutely loved this; the sequel to Bodies of Light. Ally is now a doctor, breaking boundaries by tentatively starting to practise in Truro Asylum and also finding her footing as a wife. Heartbreaking and beautifully written; with themes of feminism, suffrage, sanity and Victorian poverty, these two books are the best historical fiction I‘ve read in a long time; feeling modern and very relevant. Beautiful.

Cathythoughts Ahh very good , I loved Bodies of Light ❤️ I must stack this one 3y
JillR @cathythoughts it starts off where Bodies of Light finished and was just as good 😊 3y
Texreader Excellent review. I‘ll have to check out book 1. 3y

#12booksof2021 #April @andrew65 was a gd rdg month in which my 5* read was Olive Kitteridge but my final round up choice is the culmination of sarah moss trilogy abt a yng woman from Manchester at the origin of women qualifying as doctors. Sarah moss is so skilled in her storytelling and here newly wed Ally is left in Cornwall working in an asylum with insane women as husband Tom builds a lighthouse in Japan. Can't wait to read her latest in 2022

TrishB Not got to that one yet! 3y

Sarah moss is rapidly becoming one of my favourite authors and in this, the 3rd in a loose trilogy newly married Ally, with a job as dr in a 19th century cornish women's asylum, faces time alone as husband tom has work in Japan. Written so lovingly I was shouting at the bk when driven by her self guilt she returns to Manchester and her terrible mother. A wonderful 3 bks that I want to reread , and I am looking fwd now to her most recent novel.

There‘s a lot of #WishYouWereHere between Ally, who‘s in England, and Tom who‘s in Japan, in this book. And while this wasn‘t my favourite Moss book, I‘m still in awe of her writing skills 🙌

#MarchIntoThe70s let‘s she how long I can keep up my posting this month 😅

I love Sarah Moss. I really do. So this rating is a case of “it‘s me, not you book”. I have just been a bit down about being unemployed, so I haven‘t really been able to focus on reading. I struggled to connect to the book, which I normally don‘t do with a Moss book.

With that being said, Moss‘ writing is beautiful and I loved he focus on mental illness and treatment. Also, now I really need to visit Japan, because it sounds GORGEOUS!

8little_paws I'm sorry about your employment woes. I too find it hard to focus on reading when i'm worried about other things. 6y
alisiakae I‘m sorry you‘re struggling with unemployment. I‘ve been there before. Hopefully things will start looking up soon. 💞 6y

Reviewsbylola That‘s the worst, and I find when I‘m down like that heavy books that require a lot of concentration are very difficult for me. 6y

Kalalalatja @8little_paws @4thhouseontheleft @Lcsmcat @DivineDiana @GeekGirlOnAQuest @erzascarletbookgasm @Reviewsbylola @batsy thanks all ❤️ I know getting your first job takes time, and most days I‘m able to keep up my positivity, but these past weeks have been tough.. 6y
Moray_Reads Sorry you're finding it tough, I've been there! Something great will come along, I'm sure ❤️ 6y
emilyhaldi Oh girl, I feel you!!! My job hunt is still moving as slow as ever and I can‘t find it in me to read a single page some days. Just keep telling myself the perfect opportunity is out there just waiting for me to find it... and it will happen!! Stay strong 😘 6y
Centique It‘s so hard isn‘t it? Just know you are not alone in your feelings. 💕It hits all of us hard and makes us question ourselves. You are a star though!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 6y
Kalalalatja @Moray_Reads I know, or I really hope so! I know the average unemployment time for new psychologists are 6-8 months, so I just have to be patient. But some days that is just harder than others.. @emilyhaldi It really is the worst! The first couple of months felt like a vacation, but now I need something to happen. And soon! But we will both find something awesome when the time is right 🤞 6y
Kalalalatja @Centique thank you! All of these sweet messages are really helping my mood. 💕 I know the right job is out there for me, and hopefully it won‘t take much longer before I find it 🤞 6y

I feel like my days are moving way too fast at the moment, and being unemployed and job hunting are taking up more and more space in my mind. I‘m trying to do a bit of #selfcare today with some reading, coffee and an apple crumble. But I might end up just watching RuPaul‘s Drag Race since it feels like the only thing I can focus on at the moment 😅

Crazeedi Hoping you find the perfect job very soon! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Self care is important! Best wishes in your job hunting. ❣️ 6y

jfalkens Hope you find something soon xXxX 6y
Emilymdxn I‘m just over a year out of uni now, I was unemployed for a worrying while, I‘m currently on a fixed term contract that I‘m waiting to see if it‘ll be renewed, and it can definitely be a struggle but it‘s like this for basically everyone and it‘ll come right 💖💖 6y
BarbaraBB Exciting times. And tiring. Sending positive vibes for your job hunt! 🍀🍀🍀 6y
JennyM Take care of yourself. Xxxx 6y
Kalalalatja @jfalkens @BarbaraBB @JennyM thank you ❤️❤️ @Emilymdxn you are so right. Most of the positions I apply for is fixed terms, since that‘s where new psychologists have the biggest chance of getting a job. And I‘m close to 4 months in, so it hasn‘t even been that long, I just don‘t do well with not knowing when something will happen. 🤷‍♀️ 6y
Moray_Reads Fixed term contracts are a problem here too, especially sorry ones. I hope you find something soon. Sarah Moss is always a good choice 6y
ephemeralwaltz I know the feeling! Finishing school was scary. I had nothing lined up!!! Take care 💜 6y
Kalalalatja @Moray_Reads @ephemeralwaltz I just don‘t do well with the not knowing - not knowing when I‘ll get something, not knowing what I‘ll get, not knowing where in the country I‘ll get it. As a control freak, this is stressing me out. But I‘m trying to stay positive, and enjoy the time to read and do other stuff I normally don‘t have time for 6y
ephemeralwaltz @Kalalalatja keep us updated!!!❤️❤️ And enjoy this time for you. 6y

Every time I start a new Sarah Moss book, I can‘t help but wonder why it took me so long to pick it up. I‘m only two chapters in, and I don‘t have time to read more at the moment, but Moss has already hooked me enough that I don‘t want to stop reading.

Look what I found! An author whom I saw @Kalalalatja recommended. Couldn‘t find the other titles that you‘ve read Katja, have you read this one?

Kalalalatja No I haven‘t read that yet, but I really want too! As far as I know, this is the “sequel” to 7y
erzascarletbookgasm Oh no, it‘s a sequel? I have to find Bodies of Light then. @Kalalalatja 7y
Kalalalatja I think so, in a way. If I remember correctly, it deals with the same characters, but it might be read as a stand alone. 7y

Moray_Reads I would definitely read Bodies of Light first as this follows on directly, sorry 😣 is worth it though. They're both brilliant 7y
Cathythoughts I‘m moving Bodies of Light up my list. Sounds great ! & at least you have the next one waiting, even if you have to seek out the first ! 7y
rockpools 💙 Love these. I'm usually all for reading out-of-sequence but I agree with Moray on this Think it'd be fine as a standalone, but you'd probably get more out of it if you know Ally's backstory. 7y

A story of the first year of a marriage, spent on opposite sides of the globe (Japan and Cornwall). Of being in your right mind. Of the damage a family can do. & of kindness.

Sarah Moss ❤️. Her characters are so real, I find myself having conversations with them. (Not weird at all 😐). She writes about anxiety & mental health in a way that takes you inside the character's head. And her writing, research and storytelling are beautiful.

Also 🦊.

shawnmooney I must finally read this some day - sooner, now that I've read your review! 7y

Wishing Ally the #greatestloveofall.

She's qualified as a doctor, got married and is about to start work at an asylum. And nothing she does will ever be enough to meet her own standards.

I've just started this - I loved the first part of Ally's story and can't wait to see where it takes us. Ally is one of the most heartbreakingly real characters I've met & I'm glad to discover Sarah Moss a few books in because backlist!

Waiting for me in my Audible library (& Meriel Scholfield is the narrator who convinced me that audiobooks were worth the effort btw).

Ally is one of the first women in Britain to qualify as a doctor, and, newly married, she heads to Truro to work at the asylum with those described as #insaneinthebrain. Having suffered crippling anxiety herself (& being female) she was merely considered weak or hysterical.

@Robothugs @Cinfhen #90sinJuly
