5 posts | 28 read | 11 to read
Ellie Cavanaugh was only seven years old when her fifteen-year-old sister, Andrea was murdered. Ellie's testimony was vital to the conviction of Rob Westerfield, son of a wealthy, prominent family. Twenty-two years later Ellie remains convinced of Westerfield's guilt. When he is released on parole and attempts to prove himself the victim of a miscarriage of justice, Ellie begins work on a book she believes will prove Westerfield's guilt beyond doubt. As she delves deeper into her research, she uncovers horrifying facts that shed new light on her sister's murder. And with each new discovery she comes closer to a confrontation with a desperate killer. . .

Pickpick

I haven't read many MHC mysteries, but I've been impressed every time I have! This one starts when 7-yr-old Ellie's sister is murdered. Now, over 20 years later, the convicted murderer is being released on parole - and is determined to clear his name. Ellie, now an investigative reporter, travels back to her hometown to begin research of her own to definitively prove that he was rightfully put behind bars. MHC does a great job with the tension ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) in this one. Ellie's discoveries do not all necessarily support the idea that the convicted murderer WAS the murderer, leaving me to wonder if he really had been wrongfully convicted. There is a lot going on with this one, but the pacing was really good & I could barely put it down. I also have a habit of flipping to the end to confirm suspicions when I start feeling too tense about a story & I had to do that with this one. Sometimes I ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) need spoilers to enjoy the book!! 😂 My only real complaint was that Ellie seemed a little over-the-top in her bitterness against her dad. For an investigative reporter who, in all other instances, thoroughly researches stuff before arriving at conclusions, she definitely hasn't given her dad a chance. Still, all in all a solid thriller that had me completely hooked. 4y
AmyK1 I do that too when things get too intense 😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks @AmyK1 - it's like I can't fully enjoy it if I'm not reassured that the ending is going to be okay haha 4y
AmyK1 Yes, exactly. It‘s too stressful if I don‘t know. 4y

swynn Jonathan Livingston Seagull. I'm not sure what conclusion I should draw from that. 7y
Purrfectpages I‘ve seen this for the song, but I can‘t find the book! 7y

MirrorMask @Purrfectpages I had to go through The New York Times by year then scroll down to my birthday week. 7y
MirrorMask @swynn Seagull is a fable in novella form about a seagull who is trying to learn about life and flight, and a homily about self-perfection. Does any of that sound like your life? 7y
swynn @MirrorMask Not really, except to the extent that it's everybody's. I'm not a fan of the book, so it's curious that this meme matches me to it. 7y

Hey, Littens, sorry I've been MIA! But I have been reading - Into the Water by Paula Hawkins in print (well, ebook) & Sourdough by Robin Sloan on audio.

Dad had a slight heart attack a few days ago. He's doing GREAT, thanks in advance for your well wishes. But that took me out of commission for a few days. He's home, expecting a full recovery.

📸: nearly 23 years ago, but still one of my all-time faves of us.

readherwriteher Aww! What a wonderful picture of the two of you. I‘m sending quick recuperation vibes your dads way. 7y
jpmcwisemorgan I‘m glad he‘s home and recovering. 7y
