I should be working (bleurgh, to quote the 10th Dr), but am instead reading about early Christian saints who had a penchant for climbing up tall pillars or poles and living there. On top of a pole. As you do 😧

I live in a Catholic country and studied in Catholic schools, so saints were a pretty big feature of my life. Dickey's book, though, looks at the stories about saints my catechism classes didn't (or wouldn't) tell me: the darker, more sordid tales behind what makes a saint into a saint. It's more than just miracles, it turns out. Recommended for curious, open-minded Christians and history buffs :).
Liked Ghostland so much I decided to read Dickey's other titles, and while this one doesn't quite live up, I still love me a social history! This looks at the cultural staying power of saints more than their individual bios. (My library also only had it in ebook, so I had to break out the Kindle Fire for the first time in months just as I saw all your #ereader posts!)
