Six Degrees of Separation
Six Degrees of Separation | John Guare
10 posts | 6 read
"I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation It's a profound thought How every person is a new door, opening up into other worlds." Six Degrees of Separation is a modern American classic play: an explosive comedy that exposes white middle-class hypocrisy and prejudice. The play is a sharp, wittybut seriousexploration of the individual in society and the values or beliefs which motivate them.A young African-American man gains access to the homes of upper-class New Yorkers by pretending to be the son of actor Sidney Poitier. Treatedwith suspicion and then affection, he soonwreaks havoc in their comfortable lives. The playfirst opened off-Broadway in 1990 and, after playing to sold-out houses andovating audiences, it was producedinternationallyand made into a blockbuster film starring Donald Sutherland, Stockard Channing and Will Smith in 1994. It won numerous awards, including an Olivier and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award.

I fell in love at 16 with this play! Most of that initial adoration was due to Stockard Channing's portrayal of Ouisa. But having re-read it this weekend, I also realise and recall the power of the text/play. It combines so many worlds - art, mystery, suspense, the modern condition, and family dynamics. It is so astute in its observations of all of the above. AND there are so many put the book down and marvel at the language! MARVELLOUS!

Following the lead of @MrBook (thanks for the tag), who was inspired by Kevin Bacon‘s #istayhomefor:

-my family, especially my two wonderful grandkids, my husband, and @Alisnazzy , who still has to go to work every day
-my community, because we are all connected and all dependent on each other
-I have to be honest and say myself, because I am n the high risk group and my anxiety is through the roof
-for this beloved online community

I love this idea from Kevin Bacon, posted by @MrBook & @KristenDuck

#istayhomefor this little dude.I‘m not the only immune compromised person in the family,my grandson Tavis was born with most of his corpus callosum missing which has caused a lot of health issues including poor temperature regulation & a host of other issues. On top of that he has severe asthma! But he‘s bright, intelligent & cheeky, the plasticity of children‘s brains is amazing.

Butterfinger He is precious!! 5y

I would like to remind women as primary care givers to care for themselves in the time of Coronavirus and be sure to take care of yourself.

I stay home for:
1. My husband
2. My daughters
3. My grandchildren
4. Myself who has no immune system
5. Others that I may infect
6. My books who need to be read and organized

I‘m hoping others will stay home too!

gradcat @EadieB Very good advice, Eadie. I had to go get water at the store, as we were running low & I didn‘t want my 82-year-old mother to go. I figured I would be in and out, so I was shocked to see a grocery store full of people only yesterday! And we‘re the 3rd-most hit state with Coronavirus cases per capita in the US! I really expected to find very few people out shopping. We hadn‘t been out in days until I went to get the water. I can‘t believe it 5y
EadieB @gradcat I know people are not following the guidelines and they are putting others in jeopardy. Do your food stores have delivery? I found that so much easier. Have an order in now for pick-up for this Sunday as all the delivery times were taken. (edited) 5y
gradcat @EadieB We do have delivery, but they can‘t get to us until tomorrow at 9 pm. That‘s why I went out yesterday for water. I just couldn‘t bear for my mom to go, even though I‘m at risk owing to immunodeficiency and other factors. I literally thought I would be able to just run in & grab water, but it took much longer than I thought. I‘ll not do that again anytime soon! (We actually put our order in last Saturday—can you believe it takes that long?) 5y
EadieB @gradcat Many are doing home delivery but it should get better. You have to start your next order as soon as they deliver your present order in order to get a good delivery date. We had to do pick-up for Sunday as the delivery open date was 2 weeks from now. So my husband will pick-up the order on Sunday and the pet store is next door for the dog food and they will come out to your car. Strange times we are living in. 5y
gradcat @EadieB Strange times, indeed...it‘s like a science-fiction novel from the 1980s! 5y
EadieB @gradcat Reminds me of Stephen King's 5y
gradcat @EadieB Reminds me of several books by Robin Cook & Michael Crichton! 📚 5y
EadieB @gradcat Yes! Those books are relevant too! 5y

Just for you @BarbaraBB @BookwormAHN That‘s my Godson Barry & his gorgeous bride, Nicky!! And that‘s Barry‘s FIL and Nicky‘s dad; John 5 ( former guitarist for Marilyn Manson & currently Rob Zombie). Wedding was a year ago March 🥂John 5 was makeup free but he did wear purple lizard skin cowboy boots with his Tux and he rocked a crazy vest 💜💜💜 Was hoping he‘d play something for the couple but he was VERY mellow & understated. #90sSpringFling

BarbaraBB 😳 wooow that is so cool! She is lovely and it‘s amazing he is her father. He must be a nice man behind the make-up mask. How cool to have met him!! 6y

bookish_wookish We love Rob Zombie in this house! Very cool! 6y
Cinfhen Without his stage makeup John and Nicky look very much like father & daughter @BarbaraBB @peaknit @8little_paws @bullbunny @bookish_wookish I only spoke with him briefly and he seemed like a genuine down to earth guy....who has obviously seen some crazzzzy shit!!! Nicky‘s mom has since remarried and her stepdad is a totally nice normal Jewish guy from Florida. Very much part of the Jewish community. Funny, how life works out. 6y
ephemeralwaltz How awesome!! 6y
BookwormAHN That's really cool. He is an amazing guitarist and it is nice to know he has a down to earth side. Your godson and his wife look adorable together. 6y
Cinfhen They are actually such a sweet young couple @BookwormAHN - pretty impressive to go through life so unaffected by the allure of rock & roll. She‘s the nicest girl. So weird that my bestie is her mother in law 😂 6y

This was such a well developed play. It's so difficult to develop a multitude of characters within a few acts but Guare did it. Loved this play. And a quick read
