Vaccinated: One Man's Quest to Defeat the World's Deadliest Diseases
Vaccinated: One Man's Quest to Defeat the World's Deadliest Diseases | Paul A M.D. Offit
5 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
His goal to prevent every disease that commonly attacked children was unattainable. But Maurice Hilleman came close.Maurice Hilleman is the father of modern vaccines. Chief among his accomplishments are nine vaccines that practically every child gets, rendering formerly deadly diseases including mumps, rubella, and measles nearly forgotten. Author Paul A. Offit's rich and lively narrative details Hilleman's research and experiences as the basis for a larger exploration of the development of vaccines, covering two hundred years of medical history and traveling across the globe in the process. The history of vaccines necessarily brings with it a cautionary message, as they have come under assault from those insisting they do more harm than good. Paul Offit clearly and compellingly rebuts these arguments, and, by demonstrating how much the work of Hilleman and others has gained for humanity, shows us how much we have to lose."

My arm is a little sore but my veins are full of sweet, sweet Astra Zeneca this fine Saturday evening!
Worth noting and book related, I brought my currrent read and a backup book (obviously) for my 15 minute post vaccination wait and there was not one other person with a physical book! I didn‘t even see an ereader!
Not one for selfies but was so excited I almost cried today!

vivastory Congrats 👏💉 4y
KathyWheeler I had my Kindle with me when I got mine, but I didn‘t really even get much of a chance to read. Except for the 15 minute wait afterwards, it was a quick process. 4y
LiteraryinPA So excited for you!!! 4y

I have immune issues and got my first jab of the vaccine today. I wish the rollout was faster and more organized so everybody could more quickly get a shot, but I‘m thankful there is a vaccine. Just a little while longer to stay safe and take it slow. We can do it! 💪🏽💕😘

TheBookHippie Mine is Monday! 4y
Lindy Mine‘s on Thursday 😁 4y

BehindthePages I just got the call I can now schedule mine! Been waiting for a new supply. 4y
Tera66 I'm immunosuppressed too, it's such a relief to be vaccinated. So happy for you. 4y
Tera66 Oh, and icing the injection is supposed to help with the after pain. But I couldn't stand it. Hope it goes well for you! 4y
Elizabeth2 Yay! My hubby and I have to wait until our state opens up vaccinations for the general public. We are not considered essential and don‘t have any of the allowed underlying comorbidities. We are patiently waiting. I am so happy to see others getting the vaccine - it‘s cause for celebration each time I see it! 🎉 4y
Chrissyreadit 🥳🎉👏🙌🥳 4y
BethM @Tera66 I wish I had known that- the first one made my arm feel like it was going to fall off, but the second was fine. 4y

LibrarianToujours

What a crazy week! I've gotten hardly any reading done. A few weeks ago I had a patron ask if we would host a showing of the movie Vaxxed. After some research, I declined stating that it was factually inaccurate and that Wakefield was scientifically discredited and that as a library, presenting this info goes against our mission as an educational resource. He shared my response with the group that scheduled the screenings... (con't)

LibrarianToujours And they told him that that was censorship. So I emailed the group and said it wasn't because we provide scientifically credible info on those topics and their movie didn't fit that description. Now waiting for their response... 8y
8leagueboot Good for you for sticking to your guns and making tough decisions to best serve the public. As a side note, when you google "Vaxxed" it pops up as genre: fantasy/thriller. 8y

8leagueboot I had to laugh haha 8y
RanaElizabeth Good for you for standing your ground. My response would have been a lot less professional though, guess that's why I'm not a librarian! 💉 8y
megt I'm glad to hear you stood up to them! Very curious to hear what their response will be. 8y
LibrarianToujours @RanaElizabeth @megt I'm always glad to support different viewpoints, but I can't ignore science. 8y
LibrarianToujours @NorthEastofEden I also just noticed it was released April 1st!! 8y
megt Understandable! We've been reading in one of my classes lately about ethics and censorship in libraries and I like to think I would have come to the same conclusion you did if presented with the same scenario. As a (hopefully) future librarian, I'm all about supporting free speech, but programming that's meant to be educational should ABSOLUTELY be based in science and facts. 😀 8y
LibrarianToujours @megt There are a lot of grey areas for sure! But if it's black and white, I feel like we should stand on the side of reason. 8y
