Summer Crossing
Summer Crossing: A Novel | Truman Capote
10 posts | 16 read | 15 to read
Thought to be lost for over 50 years, here is the first novel by one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Set in New York during the summer of 1945, this is the story of a young carefree socialite, Grady, who must make serious decisions about the romance she is dangerously pursuing and the effect it will have on everyone involved. Fans of Breakfast at Tiffanys and Capotes short stories will be thrilled to read Summer Crossing.

"Please, dear, I'm not angry, really I'm not, but you must tell me: what have you done?"

I really enjoyed this distinctly Capote in the writing the story and vibe remind me of Gatsby. The hot NY summer, young people mixing in and out of their socioeconomic classes and getting themselves into trouble, this is a perfect hot day read.

For minutes, like a circulating presence, the sour sweet sweat smell of him stayed in the air, but a trifling breeze passed through the room, taking him with it: so she opened her eyes, lonely.

Thanks for the tag @jenniferw88 !

1. Strawberries 🍓😋
2. I can‘t think of an absolute fave right now, but the tagged book was really good, and very summery.
3. Yes, dolphins in the sea between Tenerife and La Gomera.

Consider yourself tagged if you want to play along!

This novella was only discovered in 2004 and is said to be the inspiration for Breakfast at Tiffany‘s. I loved the story of a privileged girl meeting an unsuitable boy told with Capote‘s waspish words.

rockpools Love that cover- and the booksleeve 😊 6y

The only thing I remember about this book is that I‘ve read it. 😆😆

It sounds lovely though. Grady McNeil spends the summer living alone in the family penthouse, carrying on a torrid affair that leads to a series of decisions that will affect the course of her life.

vivastory I've been meaning to read more Capote since I read (& loved) In Cold Blood 6y

It's a waiting game today at my interpreting assignment. I've already finished Yoko Ogawa's Diving Pool (164 pages) and am getting started in Summer Crossing now (126 pages) and I've still got about 4.5 hours to go. Guess I should have packed more books 😔
