Hot Comb | Ebony Flowers
6 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
An auspicious debut examining the culture of hair from the Rona Jaffe Foundation Awardwinning cartoonist Hot Comb offers a poignant glimpse into black womens lives and coming-of-age stories as seen across a crowded, ammonia-scented hair salon while ladies gossip and bond over the burn. The titular Hot Comb is about a young girls first perma doomed ploy to look cool and stop seeming too white in the all-black neighborhood her family has just moved into. In Virgin Hair, taunts of tender-headed sting as much as the perm itself. My Lil Sister Lena shows the stress of being the only black player on a white softball team. Lenas hair is the team curio, an object to be touched, a subject to be discussed and debated at the will of her teammates, leading Lena to develop an anxiety disorder of pulling her own hair out. Throughout Hot Comb, Ebony Flowers re-creates classic magazine ads idealizing womens need for hair relaxers and products. Change your hair form to fit your life form and Kinks and Koils Forever call customers from the page. Realizations about race, class, and the imperfections of identity swirl through these stories and ads, which are by turns sweet, insightful, and heartbreaking. Flowers began drawing comics while earning her Ph.D., and her early mastery of sequential storytelling is nothing short of sublime. From her black-and-white drawings to her color construction-paper collages, Hot Comb is a propitious display of talent from a new cartoonist who has already made her mark.

Sadly, I am returning this graphic short story collection DNF‘d. Somehow it‘s not what I had built it up to be in my head while I was waiting on the library to purchase it. Maybe there‘s another time for me and this book. But this isn‘t it. 😔

Mehso-so

This was good but not great. Some my favorite stories were too short and my least favorites too long and some stories didn't make any sense at all to me.

It was a different kind of graphic novel. Can it be called a graphic novel if it‘s a short story collection?🤷🏽‍♀️It felt a bit disjointed, but maybe that‘s because I‘ve never read a short story collection in this format. I liked the stories, but like any short story, they left me questioning what happened next.😔I want to know more! A good quick read that‘s deeper than the words let on.

In the mood for a quick read. Momo isn‘t happy since he isn‘t getting much attention right now.

TheBookAddict @AlaMich thanks! His favorite weapon of use is the “puppy dog eyes.” He tries it every time he wants to get his way. 😆 🤦🏽‍♀️ 5y

I feel like I don‘t often read graphic novels which are short stories, which made this pretty interesting.

This falls somewhere between a pick and so-so. Most of the comics are good, with a few standouts, but the collection doesn‘t quite come together. #24in48readathon

TheBookAddict I agree. It felt a little disjointed, but it is my first time reading a short story collection in this format. Cute kitty, by the way. 😺💕 (edited) 5y
