Sixteen-year-old heiress and paparazzi darling Liddi Jantzen hates the spotlight. But as the only daughter in the most powerful tech family in the galaxy, it's hard to escape it. So when a group of men shows up at her house uninvited, she assumes it's just the usual media-grubs. That is, until shots are fired. Liddi escapes, only to be pulled into an interplanetary conspiracy more complex than she ever could have imagined. Her older brothers have been caught as well, trapped in the conduits between the planets. And when their captor implants a device in Liddi's vocal cords to monitor her speech, their lives are in her hands: One word, and her brothers are dead. Desperate to save her family from a desolate future, Liddi travels to another world, where she meets the one person who might have the skills to help her bring her eight brothers homea handsome dignitary named Tiav. But without her voice, Liddi must use every bit of her strength and wit to convince Tiav that her mission is true. With the tenuous balance of the planets deeply intertwined with her brothers' survival, just how much is Liddi willing to sacrifice to bring them back? Haunting and mesmerizing, this retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Wild Swans fuses all the heart of the classic tale with a stunning, imaginative world in which a star-crossed family fights for its very survival.

So originally I remade my sequels list for #bookspin for June. But with everything going on I decided to make a list entirely of Black authors that I own.

@TheAromaofBooks

Chrissyreadit How was your first day back to work? 4y
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit short. They sent us home at one because of a planned protest at 3. They are expecting it to be peaceful but the way the library is situated we would be completely surrounded if they have over 200 people. If they just close down second we can still leave but they are expecting 1000s and if we were still at work when it started we would be stuck until it ended. ⬇️ 4y
LibrarianRyan Most of the morning was spent either being lectured on social distancing rules and cleaning rules or figuring out how things like newspaper use will work. And then getting to 537 reference emails and 53 voice mails. I got all the phone calls done and parceled our or answered 150 ish emails. Still 57 to do in the morning. And that is only parceling. Then we have to answer them. And we only get last resort questions so they take some time. 😬 4y

Chrissyreadit Woah!! That sounds exhausting and stressful! Did it end up being a large protest? 4y
LibrarianRyan @Chrissyreadit don‘t know yet. Our news sucks and I didn‘t stay down town. With the “looting parties” of last night and all the destruction I just went home. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great list!! Glad to have you along for another round!! And good luck with getting back to work - sounds complicated! 4y

So I sucked at #bookspinbonanza. I 6 fully read and the next two I read 1/2 of each. Except for news I didn‘t read anything that was not on this list. But I‘m back to work now and I may actually get some reading done. But who knows.

As for the bonanza it was nice while I was home (if I could have gotten myself to read more). But in a non-vacation/quarantine time I‘m not sure it would be possible. Holidays would be great or the winter months ⬇️

LibrarianRyan Or times you are forced to be inside. But I had fun. Thank you. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress and thanks for the thoughts!! 4y

Well, my 2018 book-buying project is off to an inauspicious start. SPINNING STARLIGHT is a perfectly serviceable fairy tale retelling, but it lacks the spark that might've let me truly connect with its characters. The relationships felt shallow, the worldbuilding never quite took on a life of its own, and the mix of first person present tense action and third person past tense flashbacks jarred me. I got bored a long time before it ended.

SassyBookworm Sad that the book sucked, but at least the cover is pretty 😉 7y

I almost never buy brand new print books for myself, so this year I'm gonna try to buy--and read--one a month. I plan to stick to women or nonbinary writers, and to books I haven't heard a whole lot (or anything) about. January's selection is an SF retelling of "The Wild Swans."

JaneyWaneyB I love that cover 😍 7y

I took this picture nearly a month ago, on one of the few days that we had snow. It's been a strange year out here in Boston, two years ago we broke our all-time record for snowfall; playgrounds were completely covered, relationships were ruined as people stole parking spots that other people had shoveled out, School roof collapsed in. It was nuts.

This year there have been two paltry snowstorms and the snow hasn't even lasted more than a day.

DragonSadhana Same here in CT. Weird weather! 8y
LazyLibrary Same in NY! I'm loving it tho! It's been 50 degrees in January!!! 💫 8y
mcipher It's scary - all I can think is that we'll never have s real winter again. CT here and same boat, two storms and it didn't last. And I love snow! 8y

Mehso-so

I would only recommend this to fans of Stitching Snow. While both standalone novels are in different worlds they are recognisably similar in setting and style. Unfortunately this fairytale retelling didn't work as well for me, I just didn't like the concept and found elements of the storytelling frustrating and tedious. Still a solid read just not a standout.

This is a very unputdownable book! A sci-fi retelling of Christian Andersons The Wild Swans. Interesting world building, and a cool female protagonist. Most of the book is frustrating cause the MC can't talk due to a mechanism in her throat.A lot of info dump, and finally action towards the end.3.5⭐️

Jessnoice Beautiful picture! 8y
Tarlia Agreed. The photo shoot here is gorgeous. 8y
