Magic and the Shinigami Detective
Magic and the Shinigami Detective | Honor Raconteur
9 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
When the Night Foxes boldly break into the Fourth Precinct's Evidence Building, it causes quite the stir. The break-in is daring enough, but their method shreds the magical wards and protections on the building like confetti paper. As a Magical Examiner, Henri Davenforth is of course immediately called in. Quite to his astonishment, Captain Gregson has him work the case like a detective. Even more astounding, he assigns Henri a partner. The Shinigami Detective. The woman is famous for killing the most destructive rogue witch of the century. Henri is just baffled. What is he supposed to do with a partner? Hopefully killing one witch makes Jamie Edwards enough of an expert on magic to be helpful, as the thieves aren't content to just break into one building. They in fact seem to have an agenda, as with each theft, they take magical objects. It's all mounting to a dangerously powerful magical construct capable of toppling the wards on any building. And no one has any idea what the thieves' true target is.

This is an interesting concept: a modern FBI agent is stolen and taken to a steampunk world where, upon freedom, she becomes a police detective there. Her partner is a lovable curmudgeon in awe of her. There are some holes (like vocabulary of the supporting characters) and weirdness (they have mostly the same food as we have) but overall it‘s a charming story. #pop23 #authorwithsameinitials

I love this book! The first in a series, FBI agent Jamie is magically taken from Earth to another world where stuff happens. I don‘t want to spoil anyone so I‘ll just say that I re-read this - and it‘s sequals - repeatedly. 5/5

Pick! There are a few odd editing hiccups (worst in the 1st chapter 🤦🏻‍♀️) & some anachronistic moments that might be the result of editing cutting a comment about idioms as part of identity but honestly, that‘s struggling to be picky. At its heart, this is a character driven, slightly steampunkey, police procedural. It‘s a fun, fast read and the “human stuck in another world” premise is executed the best I‘ve ever seen here. An exuberant pick!

CarolynM Not my usual thing but your posts about this one intrigue me. I'm going to stack it🙂 5y

“It always intrigued me when she taught me something of her own world. It inevitably made my own perceptions of this culture broader, more enriched”

[Traded quote photo for this spectacular view. “Breather” because for literally the first time in my life, I‘m babysitting but the baby‘s asleep so I‘m really just emergency back up with coffee, books, freedom and the most amazingly ripe gorgeous tomatoes I have eaten in years. Lovely interlude].

😂😂😂😂 They‘re notes from the characters 😂😂😂😂 This is self published and the early chapters really needed a a better editor but it‘s got solid world building, really interesting characters and a great plot. If it continues like this, I‘m absolutely a fan and will read the series! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

An odd book so far that suffers a little from the lack of a good editor but the eBook has hysterical snarky written comments at the top of some of the chapter titles 😂😂😂 (But embarrassingly, I had to YouTube the Ghostbusters theme because I got Beverly Hills Cop stick in my head instead 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️).

Loved the humor in this story. It was a good easy read that I would add to my reread list.
