This book has three storylines about people dealing with identity changes in one way or another. All three kick off bizarre and wild but for me they lacked suspense later on. The fact that the storylines neatly come together in the end didn‘t make up for that. An okay read by a gifted writer.

I love Station Eleven, and since this is one of Emily St. John Mandel's favorite books I thought I'd like it, too. The storyline was pretty impressive, but I just couldn't care about any of the characters. Well, at least I crossed of “a book with a great first line“ off of my #popsugarreadingchallenge.

Eep! Somehow finished my book on the last flight, need to choose and download a new one before my connection takes off. Slim pickings at the library...finally went with this one because Station Eleven author Emily Mandel said it had an awesome opening scene. Here goes nothin‘!

Mmf. The bleakness was awesome. The plot kind of meanders a bit, and I really wasn't sure what it was about or why we're given these sets of characters until the end which was pretty damn satisfying. It's an epic, somber character study. The skeleton of which you'd be able to see in Station Eleven, which is also why I picked it up, b/c SE's author cited this book's nonchalant way of narrating tragic, traumatic events in the characters' lives.

Await Your Reply had been on my TBR since 2009. When I tried it, I decided to keep reading. It has the feeling of his more recent book, Ill Will, in the sense that you know something is going on that you don't know yet but not what it is. The characters seem to be searching for missing people in their lives, definitely a theme of identity, created and stolen.

Ruthiella Good to hear. I really liked Ill Will. It totally creeped me out (in a good way).😨 5y
BarbaraBB Echoing @Ruthiella. I will check it out. 5y

Three different lives and stories all about identity and relationships and secrets. Started off interesting but got bored halfway through. I kept waiting for something major to happen. Wasn‘t blown away by the ending of this so-called “thriller.” ⭐️⭐️

Love this author, and this has been on my #mountTBR for over a year.
Just heard one of my favorite podcasts recommend it, so I've decided to start it now. Hopefully it will help get my mind off of my #10DaysOfWorkHell

This book is all sorts of crazy. Identical twins, those emails from far away that are too good to be true, reinventing one's self multiple times - it's all in here and more I really enjoyed the book - flew through it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

LauraJ Good to know this has a seal of approval from one of #TheLauras 😉 7y

Next up! I'm not entirely sure when or where I bought this. Or for that matter, why. Thriller-type books are not usually my thang. #itjustappearedonmyshelf

Zelma Dan Chaon is supposed to be great, and I've heard good things about this book. 👍 7y
Laura317 @Zelma It is certainly starting off strangely. 7y

Chaon has a new novel out next March, so I figured I'd finally check out one of his other ones. (Love his short stories!)

Finished this one on audio yesterday and I'm still thinking about the twists and turns it took. Really interesting character explorations throughout. Enjoyed the audio, but given the complexities of the story I think it's better suited for print reading.
