Reading in the Wild
Reading in the Wild: The Book Whisperer's Keys to Cultivating Lifelong Reading Habits | Donalyn Miller
19 posts | 13 read | 8 to read
In Reading in the Wild, reading expert Donalyn Miller continues the conversation that began in her bestselling book, The Book Whisperer. While The Book Whisperer revealed the secrets of getting students to love reading, Reading in the Wild, written with reading teacher Susan Kelley, describes how to truly instill lifelong "wild" reading habits in our students. Based, in part, on survey responses from adult readers as well as students, Reading in the Wild offers solid advice and strategies on how to develop, encourage, and assess five key reading habits that cultivate a lifelong love of reading. Also included are strategies, lesson plans, management tools, and comprehensive lists of recommended books. Copublished with Editorial Projects in Education, publisher of Education Week and Teacher magazine, Reading in the Wild is packed with ideas for helping students build capacity for a lifetime of "wild" reading. "When the thrill of choice reading starts to fade, it's time to grab Reading in the Wild. This treasure trove of resources and management techniques will enhance and improve existing classroom systems and structures." Cris Tovani, secondary teacher, Cherry Creek School District, Colorado, consultant, and author of Do I Really Have to Teach Reading? "With Reading in the Wild, Donalyn Miller gives educators another important book. She reminds us that creating lifelong readers goes far beyond the first step of putting good books into kids' hands." Franki Sibberson, third-grade teacher, Dublin City Schools, Dublin, Ohio, and author of Beyond Leveled Books "Reading in the Wild, along with the now legendary The Book Whisperer, constitutes the complete guide to creating a stimulating literature program that also gets students excited about pleasure reading, the kind of reading that best prepares students for understanding demanding academic texts. In other words, Donalyn Miller has solved one of the central problems in language education." Stephen Krashen, professor emeritus, University of Southern California

1. I used to be a strictly one-book-at-a-time girl, but that‘s changed! I now simultaneously read one book, listen to an audible book, and read one or more books for group reads.
2. Yes, and it‘s usually much better than the actual film!
3. I guess an outsider, but I strongly identify with the characters and empathize with them.
4. My children are grown, so my ongoing task is to try to persuade them to read my favorites! 😁

#ReadingResolutions Day 2: My #ShelfieSaturday - I am looking forward to rearranging all these books as we prepare to move to a new home (still on campus) in two months‘ time. Quite a few more custom-made shelves of the same size not shown here. 📚🧚🏼‍♀️

RadicalReader @GatheringBooks never seen shelves more bursting with pleasant reading material to while away the hours 6y
Kalalalatja Sooo many books 😍😍😍 6y
CindyE09 Serious envy over here 😍😍 6y
JHSiess Gives me the heeby-jeebies . . . 😳 Illustrates why I am going almost totally digital. But I'm at a point in life when I'm looking forward to retirement, downsizing (I owe 2 3-bedroom houses & want to sell both and buy a condo or smaller home), & lots of vacations. The thought of moving all those books & paying the housekeeper to dust those shelves is overwhelming to me! 🙄 #DifferentStrokesForDifferentFolks👍 #IAmAnOldFart🤷‍♀️ 6y

#ClosingSurvey for #DeweysReadathon #Readathon - with a photo of my daughter lying under one of the benches in the library before she was approached by one of the librarians and requested very politely to sit properly.

cathysaid Properly is so overrated. 🙄 7y
GatheringBooks @cathysaid i agree completely. :) 7y
Eggs Why discourage reading!?!? 7y

#readingfavourites @thereadingowlvina

1. Print is my favorite, but I have been enjoying e-books lately.

2. In the summer, I love reading on my back porch. In the winter on the couch in the den where I can look outside.

3. Anything crunchy works for my snack. Hot or cold tea for my beverage.

4. Only ONE book at a time.

5. I prefer evening, but I do get in some afternoon reading at times.

thereadingowlvina Love your reading spots! 😊 7y

Okay, I'm late to the party! @monkeygirlsmama tagged me and challenged me to purple. Sadly this was the best I could do. 😕 #bookcolortag

Only one more day till the awesomest #24in48 Readathon. Woo hoo! I'm still going through my #tbrs to see which ones will make my most wanted to read list. Too many choices! 🙃Gotta download a couple audiobooks too. I usually rely on them during the wee hours. Who else is readathoning?

monkeygirlsmama I am! Haven't really decided on a hard and firm booklist yet. 7y
MemoirsForMe @monkeygirlsmama Yay! I may just keep a variety of books on hand and see what mood hits me. Catch you tomorrow! 7y
monkeygirlsmama @UwannaPublishme I think that's easier cause it takes away the pressure aspect. Okay, see you! 😁 7y

I'm not very outdoorsy. I do sometimes sit on my deck to read! But here's a great book by the Book whisperer about cultivating life long readers. #booksinthewild #RIOTGRAMS

rubyslippersreads Glad to know I'm not the only one who isn't outdoorsy. I always quote that line from Titanic: "You seem like kind of an indoor girl." ? 7y

Arrived for the first day of Coachella yesterday and not five minutes in we ran into these people, taking a break from the music to read. And I thought I was the only "weirdo" who did that! ?
