Not Quite Snow White | Ashley Franklin

A picture book for magical yet imperfect girls everywhere, written by debut author Ashley Franklin and perfect for fans of such titles as Mary Had a Little Glam by Tammi Sauer and the classic Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman. Tameika is a girl who belongs on the stage. She loves to act, sing, and danceand shes pretty good at it, too. So when her school announces their Snow White musical, Tameika auditions for the lead princess role. But the other kids think shes not quite right to play the role. They whisper, they snicker, and they glare. Will Tameika let their harsh words be her final curtain call? Not Quite Snow White is a delightful and inspiring picture book that highlights the importance of self-confidence while taking an earnest look at what happens when that confidence is shaken or lost. Tameika encourages us all to let our magic shine.

This book was so cute! It really will allow students of color to make personal connections and feel empowered! I love the message of this book. It is a realistic fiction picture book and I would use the read aloud strategy to really enforce key ideas and visualization

Hannacallaham For ESOL I would choose 14. Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant and 3. Encourage self talk 5y
Hannacallaham For UDL I would implement 7.2 and 9.1 5y

“She shone like the star she was. She could act. She could dance. She could sing. She loved herself as much as she loved the music and movement.”

Not Quite Snow White by Ashley Franklin (traditional lit, published 2019) was an adorable book. It is a FANTASTIC take on a classic everyone knows. It takes on such a large issues in this day and age- race, self image, and so much more! A book i definitely think it‘s fantastic to have in any classroom library.

New into the library—donated by a parent who read a good review—is this book about a young girl who wants to play Snow White in the school play until she overhears some other students whispering she just isn‘t princess material. Except...maybe those students are wrong & maybe Tamika has exactly what it takes to play the part. A delightful story & great book for inclusion & diversity. I ❤️ that our parents are always on the lookout for great books!
