"Shreve's 17th novel is a tragic yet hopeful story of love, memory, loss, and rebuilding....The novel is both tender and harsh....Shreve's thoughtful, provocative historical tale has modern resonance." ---"Publishers Weekly" Stella Bain has no memory of her past when she wakes up in a hospital bed in Marne, France. It is 1916, and she wears the uniform of a British war nurse but speaks with an American accent. As soon as she is able, Stella sets out for London, where she hopes to find answers. What she discovers-with the help of Dr. August Bridge, who takes an interest in her case-both shocks and startles. As Stella's memories come racing back, she must undertake a journey across the ocean to confront the haunted past of the woman she used to be. In this gripping historical drama that transports us from Europe to America and back again, Anita Shreve weaves an engrossing tale about love and memory, set against the backdrop of a war that devastated an entire generation.

Mehso-so

Read for IRL book club, otherwise would have never picked up this WWI historical fiction novel. Only 6 hr audiobook, so I‘m not out much but it‘s forgettable and this storyline is overdone. American woman goes to help war effort abroad, loses herself in the process. I didn‘t enjoy it, but I‘ve read worse. Plus, I‘m not the reader for this: so-so.

rockpools You‘ve convinced me I probably don‘t need to attempt Anita Shreve a second time. Thanks! (edited) 2y

An American woman is found at a London park dressed in a French VAD(Voluntary Aid Detachment)uniform. She is extremely weak and has lost her memory. Stella discovers that her life is complicated. Themes: the rights of women, mental health, marriage. With the back drop of World War I, the setting moves from Europe to America and back. Ultimately, a story of memory and love.
Scored low in believability, but high in fierce woman category. #bookclub

Does anyone else stress buy? I am definitely not reading enough to justify another kobo purchase and I have a real urge to hit up the used bookstore and buy all of their 1980s horror paperbacks 😬

Dean Martin's book haul. He's a literary cat, for sure. This is his final book haul for the year because his spending is out of control (blame it on the cat). @Barb1

Instantly engaging. Reading in Ro's room as he falls asleep can be dangerous; I fall asleep or hang out too long.
